c. That University Honors be awarded to the graduating students named in the list distributed at the meeting.

d. That Departmental Honors be awarded to the graduating students named in the list distributed at the meeting.

2. Recommendation from the Steering Committee (Mr. O'Dowd)

a. The Steering Committee recommends the adoption of the following resolution:

The Senate approves the general form of the program requirements, course of instruction, and administrative arrangements of the Oakland University Academy of Dramatic Art.

The following statements present an outline of the program of the Academy of Dramatic Art:

1) The Academy of Dramatic Art offers a two-year diploma program. The basic requirement for obtaining the diploma is the completion of 60 semester credits of satisfactory work under the direction of the faculty of the Academy.

2) Admission to the Academy of Dramatic Art will be by competitive audition. A minimum requirement for admission to the Academy will be a high school diploma; however, students will be urged to complete their baccalaureate studies or at least obtain two years of undergraduate liberal arts education before applying to the Academy.

3) Admission to the Academy of Dramatic Art will not constitute admission to other curricula of the University. Should a student choose to transfer to the regular academic program, he must be admitted to that program and no credit will be given for work done in the Academy of Dramatic Art.

4) All students in the Academy of Dramatic Art are full-time students. The curriculum is the same for all students and consists of a sequence of work in speech, movement, and acting technique in each of the six terms.

5) Plans have been made to admit 45 students to the Academy of Dramatic Art in its first year. These students will be admitted at the rate of 15 in each of the three terms offered by the Academy. The academic year will extend from early October until late June.

6) It is anticipated that all students in the Academy will seek employment in the professional theatre upon graduation. It is not expected that these students will proceed to other academic work or to careers in teaching. If they should choose to move in these other directions, they will normally be expected to complete additional studies or to have already acquired degrees before starting their work in the Academy.

3. Recommendation from the Academic Affairs Committee (Mr. Burke)

a. The Committee urges the adoption of the following amended version of the University grading system:

The numerical grading system adopted on April 15, 1963, will include grades ranging in tenths of a point from 0.0 to 4.0, with the exception of the grades 0.1 to 0.4 inclusive. The grades 4.0, 4.2, and 4.3 will no longer be considered part of the grading system. This amended grading system will take effect in the winter semester of 1967.

This recommendation is inspired by the mounting reports of confusion in communication and injustice to students which result from the existence of grades in excess of 4.0.
