Provost O'Dowd called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m.

Registrar Atkinson presented the tentative list of candidates for this spring semester's graduation for review. He stated that final grades will not be available until Monday, August 15; therefore, final action on this list will be made at the next Senate Meeting, Wednesday, August 17.

Mr. Dutton moved for the Committee on Academic Standing and Honors the approval of the list of candidates for departmental honors, except those recommended by the Department of Sociology:

Area Studies:  Alien George Hyer
Art :  Maxine Marilyn West
Chemistry:  Sheldon Chase
Elementary Education: Carol Jean Coppens,  Linda Marie Harsen,  Hazel Lee Rybicki
English:  Sister M. Clare Romano, Sister Anne Vincent Kora,  Nancy Ann Timbrook
History:  Kathleen Ann McElliott,  Charles W. Westrin,  Susan Louise Mayhew
Physics: David Jorgensen
Political Science:  James Abbott Thompson
Psychology:  Maureen Frances McClow

Seconded by Mr. Burdick.

Mr. Dutton explained the decision of the Committee in taking the above action as it affected the Sociology Department recommendations by reading the Senate rule regarding the procedure for recommending students for departmental honors. The Chairman of the Sociology Department, who was made aware of the Committee's decision, stated he or a representative of the department would be present at this meeting to ask for a waiver of the one-third limitation in order to recommend two candidates for departmental honors. No one from the department appeared.

The motion was adopted.

Mr. Hetenyi moved that the Senate direct a letter to the chairman of the Sociology Department informing him of the Senate's action regarding the department's recommendations for departmental honors.  (The letter was to also inform the chairman that this decision can be reviewed at the next Senate meeting, August 17, if the department wishes to send a representative to make a case for the recommendations.)

Seconded by Mr. Burdick.  Adopted.
