Oakland University Senate

April 19, 1966

Agenda

MEMORANDUM
April 18, 1966

TO:  All Members of the Senate

FROM:  Donald D. O'Dowd, for the Steering Committee

RE:  Agenda for Meeting of April 19, 1966.

The next meeting of the Senate will be on Tuesday, April 19, 1966, at 3:30 p.m. in Rooms 128, 129 and 130 of the Oakland Center.

A. New Business

1. Recommendations from the Committee on Academic Standing and Baccalaureate Honors (Mr. Marz)

(It is requested that the Senate authorize a final vote on the following three motions at this meeting.)

a. The Faculty of Oakland University nominates the undergraduate students named in the attached list to receive the bachelor's degree at the Fourth Spring Commencement on Saturday, April 23, 1966.

b. The Faculty of Oakland University awards University Honors to the graduating students named in the attached list.

c. The Faculty of Oakland University awards Departmental Honors to the graduating students named in the attached list.

B. Old Business

1. Recommendations from the Steering Committee (Mr. O'Dowd)

a. The following motion by Mr. Hetenyi proposed at the April 6 meeting of the Senate is being presented to the body for final action at this meeting:

The Committee on Instruction is instructed to reconsider all variable credit courses from the viewpoint of keeping them in line with the spirit of the Hucker Plan.

Comment:
This motion would have the effect of retaining the four credit unit in all cases of regular courses, UC and departmental, and interpret the leeway proposed to permit low credit courses for such areas as chorus, computer programming, etc.

2. Recommendation from the Academic Affairs Committee (Mr. Simmons)

a. The AAC presents for Senate consideration a revised version of the second part of the April 6 Hetenyi motion agreed upon after consultation between Mr.  Hetenyi and the Committee.  The present form is agreeable to Mr. Matthews who seconded Mr. Hetenyi's motion. We move that the requirements for the field-distribution courses under the new curriculum plan be amended as follows;

F. Science and Mathematics: 12 credits
OR Science and/or Mathematics: 8 credits

A student choosing this option will then take an additional four credits under Part C, Fine Arts, in which case the requirement under C would be Art and Music.

Comment:
For the student who ordinarily would take courses in Mathematics and Science in the pursuit of his major the 12 credits would be satisfied by his departmental courses and he would only need to take the four credits in Art or Music. For the non-science oriented Liberal Arts student who does not wish to complete the full 12 credits in Science and Mathematics we offer the option of satisfying this requirement with 8 credits of course work in Science and/or Mathematics and taking the additional four credits under Fine Arts.

N.B.: The Steering Committee wishes to recommend that the preceding motion be amended in the light of Senate action at the meeting of April 12. At that meeting the Senate adopted a motion declaring that parenthetical statements qualifying the field distribution requirements in the Hucker legislation would be descriptive and not prescriptive.  Therefore, the Steering Committee puts forth the following amendment in the interest of legislative consistency:

That the words "in which case the requirement under C would be Art and Music" be dropped from the revised Hetenyi motion.

b. The Senate is requested to approve the following motion concerning s new catalog entry:

A course in Geography is authorized to be offered beginning fall semester 1966 for the benefit of students who wish to become better acquainted with the influence of relief, climate, and natural resources on the life, movement and history of man.
