OLD BUSINESS
Mr. O'Dowd, for the Steering Committee, reintroduced the motion made by Mr. Hetenyi at the April 6, meeting of the Senate which was previously seconded by Mr. Matthews:
The Committee on Instruction is instructed to reconsider all variable credit courses from the viewpoint of keeping them in line with the spirit of the Hucker Plan.
Comment:
This motion would have the effect of retaining the four credit unit in all cases of regular courses, UC and departmental, and interpret the leeway proposed to permit low credit courses for such areas as chorus, computer programming, etc.
The motion was adopted.
Mr. Simmons, for the Academic Affairs Committee, introduced a revised version of the second part of Mr. Hetenyi's motion of April 6. After consultation between Mr. Hetenyi and the Committee, it was agreed to amend the requirements for the field distribution courses under the new curriculum plan as follows;
F. Science and Mathematics: 12 credits
OR Science and/or Mathematics: 8 credits
A student choosing this option will then take an additional four credits under Part C, Fine Arts, in which case the requirement under C would be Art and Music.
This motion was previously seconded by Mr. Matthews who seconded the revised version.
Comment:
For the student who ordinarily would take courses in Mathematics and Science in the pursuit of his major and 12 credits would be satisfied by his departmental courses and he would only need to take the four credits in Art or Music. For the non-science oriented Liberal Arts student who does not wish to complete the full 12 credits in Science and Mathematics, we offer the option of satisfying this requirement with 8 credits of course work in Science and/or Mathematics and taking the additional four credits under Fine Arts.
Mr. O'Dowd, for the Steering Committee, moved to amend (in the light of Senate action at the meeting of April 12, which stated that parenthetical statements qualifying the field-distribution requirements in the Hucker legislation would be descriptive and not prescriptive) that the words, "in which case the requirements under C would be Art and Music," be dropped from the revised Hetenyi motion. Seconded by Mr. Heubel. Not adopted.
Mr. Brown moved to amend the revised motion to delete the words, "and/or," and substitute the words, "and when desirable mathematics." Seconded by Mr. Cherno. Not adopted.
Mr. Cherno moved to amend the revised motion to delete the words, "in which case the requirement under C would Art and Music," and substitute the words, "but not in the same subject discipline." Seconded by Mr. Lessing. Not adopted.
The main motion was then adopted.
Mr. Simmons reintroduced the recommendation of the Academic Affairs Committee, previously seconded by Mr. Lowy, to authorize a course in Geography to be offered beginning fall semester 1966.
A course in Geography is authorized to be offered beginning fall semester 1966 for the benefit of students who wish to become better acquainted with the influence of relief, climate, and natural resources on the life, movement and history of man.
Adopted.
Mr. Hammerle moved for adjournment. Seconded by Mr. Cherno. Adopted.
Meeting adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
