Minutes
PRESENT: Messrs. Appleton, Beardslee, G. Brown, H. Burdick, Cammack, Cherno, Collins, Dettman, Harding, Hetenyi, Heubel, Hildum, Hoopes, Hough, Howes, Hucker, Matthews, McKay, Mobley, O'Dowd, Qualntance, Sells, Simmons, Stoutenburg, Susskind, Tafoya, Tipler, Tomboulian, Varner, Wllliamson.
ABSENT: Messrs. Eklund, Galloway, Haden, Hammerle, Malm, Pitts, Schwab, Stubblefield, Swanson.
GUESTS: Messrs. Atkinson, Burke, Crowder, Evarts.
Chancellor Varner called the meeting to order at 3:22 p.m.
The minutes of April 14, 1965 had not been prepared by the secretary. They will be considered for approval at a subsequent Senate meeting.
Mr. Hucker moved that all new business related to graduation be acted upon at this meeting. Seconded by Mr. Simmons. Motion adopted.
Mr. Sells moved the recommendation of the Committee on Academic Standing and Honors: "THAT THE FACULTY OF OAKLAND UNIVERSITY NOMINATE THE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS NAMED IN THE ATTACHED LIST TO RECEIVE THE BACHELORS DEGREE IN COURSE TO BE AWARDED AT THE THIRD COMMENCEMENT ON SATURDAY, APRIL 24, 1965. " Seconded by Mr. Simmons. Motion adopted.
Mr. Sells moved the recommendation of the Committee on academic Standing and Honors: "That University Honors be awarded to the members of the graduating class named in the attached list. " Seconded by Mr. Glen Brown.
Mr. Hucker moved to amend the motion to move Mark H. Wirth from magna cum laude to summa cum laude. Seconded by Mr. Tipler. After a brief discussion the vote was called. Motion not adopted.
A final vote was then taken on Mr. Sells' original motion. "THAT UNIVERSITY HONORS BE AWARDED TO THE MEMBERS OF THE GRADUATING CLASS NAMED IN THE ATTACHED LIST." Motion adopted.
Mr. Sells moved the recommendation of the Committee on Academic Standing and Honors: "THAT DEPARTMENTAL HONORS BE AWARDED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATIONS RECORDED IN THE ATTACHED LIST." Seconded by Mr. Hetenyi. Motion adopted.
Mr., Hoopes moved the recommendation of the Committee on Graduate Study, Sections I and II. (This proposal was distributed to all senators at the meeting. It will be made a part of the final action.) Seconded by Mr. O'Dowd.
Mr. Matthews moved "That the Meadow Brook School of Music, Summer Session 1965, be authorized to offer certain courses for graduate credit subject to the approval of the Committee on Graduate Study. " Seconded by Mr. Simmons
Mr. Hetenyi moved to amend the motion by adding the words, "in consultation with the department chairmen concerned," to the second sentence in Section II. A. 2. after the words "The Executive Office for Graduate Programs ..." Seconded by Mr. Hoopes.
Mr. Appleton moved to amend the motion by changing Section I.A. 4. to read "The graduate admissions policy of Oakland University will be selective. Admission will be granted on the recommendation of the department concerned. An applicant is further directed to familiarize himself with supplementary requirements and course of study specified by the department." Seconded by Mr. Susskind.
Mr. O'Dowd moved to amend the motion by changing Section I,A,4. to read "The graduate admissions policy of Oakland University will be selective. Admission will be granted on the basis of information presented, including (a) undergraduate record, (b) letters of recommendation, and (c) scores on such examinations as may be required. An applicant is further directed to familiarize himself with supplementary requirements and course of study specified by the department. " Seconded by Mr. Williamson.
Mr. McKay moved to amend the motion by changing Section I.A. 4. to read "The graduate admissions policy of Oakland University will be selective. Admission will be granted by the department involved on the basis of (a) undergraduate record, (b) letters of recommendation, and (c) scores on such examinations as may be required. An applicant is further directed to familiarize himself with supplementary requirements and course of study specified by the department. " Seconded by Mr. Glen Brown.
Messrs. Appleton and O'Dowd withdrew their amendments to Section I.A. 4.; and Messrs. Susskind and Williamson withdrew their seconds.
Mr. Heubel announced that the ballots for the election of new senators were in the mall and should be returned by April 23 (noon).
Mr. Hetenyi raised the question about when the senate would approve graduate programs so that recruiting for students could be started. He stated his concern for the necessity to keep faith with students based on information given to them at the time of admission.
Mr. McKay moved "That the senate delegate to the Committee on Graduate Programs the authority to approve graduate programs for the coming year. " Seconded by Mr. O'Dowd.
Mr. Matthews moved to adjourn. Seconded by Mr. Tomboulian. Motion adopted.
