FROM: Ad Hoc Committee on Special Summer Academic Programs for 1965: H. Burdick, G. Matthews, D. D. O'Dowd, and P. Tomboulian (chairman)
SUBJECT: Proposal for Senate Action
In view of the success of the first Meadow Brook Festival and Oakland's unique position as the only university in the country with a major professional symphony orchestra in residence on its campus during the summer, the following proposal is recommended for Senate action:
The Senate hereby approves in principle the 1965 Special Summer Session in Music - a credit-granting program offering a variety of courses in music during a six-week period. Approval is given only for the 1965 session.
A tentative description of the 1965 summer session:
1 During 1965, the vast majority of the students enrolled and receiving credit would be in the special student category (those not enrolled for a degree).
2. Enrollment would be limited to distinguished students in music selected by the music faculty working in conjunction with the admissions office. Prospective students must have completed at least their junior year in high school. An audition is required.
3. Typical enrollment would be for two or three two-credit courses (four or six credits). Courses would be selected from the following groups (usually only one course from each group):
a. music theory (MUS 112 or 113). Parts of our present MUS 212.
b. music history and literature (MUS 121 or 122). Parts of our present UC 047.
c. class instruction in a particular instrument (MUS 160 - 175). Four hours of lessons per week.
d. individual instruction in a particular instrument (MUS l80-195). Three hours of lessons per week plus orchestral lessons.
e. conducting (MUS 551 or 552). Special advanced courses for students with undergraduate degrees in music.
