Minutes

PRESENT: Messrs. Appleton, G, Brown, H, Burdick, Cammack, Cherno, Collins, Dettman, Eklund, Galloway, Haden, Hammerle, Harding, Hetenyi, Heubel, Hildum, Hoopes, Hough, Howes, Hucker, Malm, Matthews, McKay, Mobley, O'Dowd, Quaintance, Sells, Simmons, Stoutenburg, Susskind, Swanson, Tafoya, Tipler, Tomboulian, Vamer and Williamson,
ABSENT: Messrs. Beardslee, Pitts, Schwab and Stubblefleld,
GUESTS: Messrs. Crowder and Jenkins

The meeting was called to order by Chancellor Vainer at 4:10 p,m�

Mr.  Mobley reported the results of Part A of the Steering Committee election which closed at 3:00 p.m. September 24.   Elected to the Committee for the present academic year are: Messrs, Hammerle, Heubel, Hoopes and Sells.

Ballots were then distributed , Part B of the Steering Committee Election, by the Election Committee.  Mr. Williamson asked to have his name withdrawn from the ballot.  Mr. Mobley asked for nominations from the floor. Mr. Collins was nominated by Mr. Simmons.  Nominations were closed. The Election Committee announced the election of Mr. Hucker and Mr. Matthews to the Steering Committee.

Mr. 0'Dowd announced that he had received most of the Reports of Standing and Ad hoc Committees,

Mr., McKay announced that the University had allocated $7,500 for the Faculty Grants Fund, which is a 50 percent increase over last year, and that there is additional support of $11,540 from the National Science Foundation for research in the areas of science.

Mr. Quaintance said that as Chairman of the Publications Committee he had been asked by the Oakland Observer if it could send a reporter to cover the Senate meetings. After some discussion, Mr. Qualntance moved that the Senate make it a regular policy to allow a student from the Oakland Observer to attend meetings and submit copies of articles to a person so designated by the Senate before publishing in the newspaper. Seconded by Mr. Haden.  Not approved.

Mr. Hucker asked for names of good academic people for commencement speakers which could be recommended to Chancellor Varner.  Mr. O'Dowd said the Senior Class Committee is now working on a list of proposed speakers to be recommended to the Commencement Committee.

Meeting adjourned at 4:37 p.m.
