PRESENT: Messrs. APPLETON, BEARDSLEE, BROWN, M., BURDICK, CHERNO, CLARKE, EKLUND, HADEN, HETENYI, HEUBEL, HILDUM, HOOPES, HOWES, LEE, LOWY, MAHER, MATTHEWS, MCKAY, OBEAR, 0'DOWD. ROOSE, SEIKEN, SELLS, SIMMONS, STOUTENBURG, SUSSKIND, SWANSON, TAFOYA, TOMBOULIAN, VARNER, WILDER.
ABSENT: Messrs. COLLINS, GALLOWAY, HAMMERLE, MOBLEY, SIMONS, STUBBLEFIELD, WILLIAMSON, HUCKER.
GUEST: Mr. MILLER.
The meeting was called to order at 4:10 p.m. by Chancellor Varner.
Mr., Hoopes moved to adopt the minutes of December 17, 1963, as presented by the secretary. Seconded by Mr. Susskind. Approved.
Mr. Hetenyi moved that the Senate waive normal voting procedures and take final action today on the following graduation recommendations of the Committee on Academic Standing. Seconded by Mr. Susskind. Approved.
Mr. Sells moved the recommendation of the Committee on Academic Standing that the attached Registrar's List of 18 candidates for the Bachelor's degree be approved by the Senate. Seconded by Mr. Susskind. Approved.
Mr. Sells moved the recommendation of the Committee on Academic Standing that Michael Batinski be awarded the degree magna cum laude and that he also be awarded Departmental Honors in History. Seconded by Mr. Susskind. Approved.
1. Mr. O'Dowd gave the following report of the Steering Committee's activities:
a. The Steering Committee has been attempting to work more closely with the standing and ad hoc committees through its designated liaison members.
b. The Committee has discussed a memorandum from the Student-Faculty University Committee and referred several recommendations that it contains to the appropriate agencies for consideration.
c. The ad hoc Committee on the Revision of the Constitution, Bylaws, and Elections Procedures has reported that it will present a revised constitution for the consideration of the Senate in the near future.
Chancellor Varner reported on the progress of the concert shell and the contractual arrangements with the Detroit Symphony.
Chancellor Varner announced the appointment of Mr. James Hicks as Director of Development, Alumni and Community Engagement, effective January 1. Mr. Hicks will work with the organization and development of the summer music festival. Chancellor Varner reported on the Appropriation Committee's visit to Oakland University.
