August 20, 1963 Meeting Minutes

Oakland University Senate

August 20,  1963

Minutes

PRESENT: Messrs. BURDICK, CHERNO, HETENYI, MATTHEWS, OBEAR, and O'DOWD.
ABSENT: Mr. STUBBLEFIELD.
GUESTS: Messrs. McKAY, ROOSE, SELLS, STOUTENBURG, and VARNER.

The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Chairman Cherno.

Mr. Roose moved, for the Ad Hoc Committee on Honors, that Departmental Honors be granted as follows to two graduates of August, 1963:

Department    Elementary Education    Janet Lichvar
                    Sociology- Anthropology Sixten Netzler

Seconded by Mr. Hetenyi. Approved.

Mr. Roose moved, for the Ad Hoc Committee on Honors, that Mr. Eugene LaRowe, a major in mathematics whose cumulative grade average is 3.62, be graduated Magna Cum Laude. Seconded by Mr. Obear. Approved.

Mr. Roose then read the following statement for the Ad Hoc Committee on Honors, "Also, may we call your attention to Philip Mack whose cumulative average is 3.16. As the only other person with a cumulative average above 3.00, he could be considered for cum laude, although our committee makes no recommendation in his case." After a brief discussion it was decided that Mr. Philip Mack should not be awarded University Honors.

Mr. Cherno read the list of August, 1963 graduates, prepared by the Registrar's Office (see attached list) who were eligible to receive either a B.A. or B.S. from Oakland University. Mr. O'Dowd moved the acceptance of these students for degrees. Seconded by Mr. Hetenyi. Approved.

A question of whether Miss Kay Lorentzen should be added to the graduation list was raised by Mr. Burdick. Mr. Stoutenburg reviewed Miss Lorentzen's record for the group, and it was agreed that Miss Lorentzen still had not completed the requirements for a degree.

Mr. Roose asked the Senate to consider adding Mr. Janes Burkart's name to the graduation list. After considerable discussion and a presentation by Mr. Roose in Mr. Burkart's behalf, Mr. Hetenyi moved to add Mr. Burkart's name to the graduation list. (Mr. Hetenyi stated that he made this motion to put the matter before the Senate, but that he personally felt very much opposed to approval). Seconded by Mr. Obear. At this point Messrs. O'Dowd, Matthews, and Hetenyi withdrew themselves from voting on Mr. Burkart's case because they had been involved in previous recommendations. This left the matter of a final vote to Messrs. Cherno, Obear, and Burdick. The final vote was 2-1 to allow Mr. Burkart to graduate. However, Chairman Chemo asked that the minutes of this meeting make it very clear that 2.0 continues to be the GPA for graduation from Oakland University, and that the final decision in favor of Mr. Burkart should in no way be considered a precedent.

Meeting adjourned.
