MINUTES OF MEETING OF APRIL 15. 1963
Mr. Tomboulian said he had not received a list of the 146 graduates that were to be part of the minutes of April 11th, and asked that they be sent to each member of the Senate. Mr. McKay asked that the graduates major be made part of the list. The minutes were then approved with Mr. Tomboulian and Mr. McKay's requests recognized.
NEW BUSINESS
Mr. Hammerle moved "The Senate establishes a seven member ad hoc Committee on Degrees and Honors and empowers this Committee to act in its name in approving all degrees and honors to be awarded at the completion of the spring semester, 1963. The Steering Committee wishes to nominate the following Senators for membership in the ad hoc Committee on Degrees and Honors:
Melvin Cherno, Chairman
Harvey Burdick
Laszlo Hetenyi
George Matthews
Frederick Obear
Donald O'Dowd
Beauregard Stubblefield
The Steering Committee recommends that in August this ad hoc Committee should follow the general guidelines that were established by the full Senate in April when degrees and honors were approved." Seconded by Mr. Tomboulian.
Mr. McKay asked when the Committee would meet. Mr. O'Dowd said it would meet August 20th, at 10:00 a.m.
Mr. Hammerle questioned whether there were enough Senators present to pass the motion. Mr. O'Dowd appointed Mr. Cherno parliamentarian to see if it would require a special procedural motion. Mr. O'Dowd stated the Senate was departing from the usual procedure in order to pass the motion. Mr. Hetenyi called the question. Motion approved.
REPORT ON ADMISSIONS
Mr. Stoutenburg said that we have received for fall semester, 806 applications which put us ahead of last year by 2 months. He then explained the deposit procedure that is being used as new students are admitted for the fall semester. Commuting students are required to deposit $50.00 within a three week period after they have been notified of admission, while residents are required to deposit $75.00. At this time, he said, we have 423 deposits -- 174 dorm people and 249 commuters. A check with the housing office indicates that the dorms are now filled with two to the room and to acceptance of any more resident students will mean tripling up in certain rooms.

The new freshmen class is coming from 110 different schools, with the larger portion coming from schools close to Oakland such as: Pontiac Northern, Pontiac Central, Utica, Rochester, Birmingham, Royal Oak Dondero and Royal Oak Kimball. We have 23 out-of-state students from 9 states.
Quality-wise 71% of the students arc coming from the upper quarter of their graduating class, and 22% are from the second quarter of their class.
On a decile basis: 32% are in the upper 10%, 29% are in the second 10%, and 17% are in the third.
Mr. Simons asked where the other 35% of the new class would come from, if Mr. Stoutenburg was talking about only 65%. Mr. Stoutenburg said that a lot of these would be local people who had been admitted to other universities and due to financial reasons find that it is necessary for them to go to school closer to home. Mr. Stoutenburg said he felt the number for fall would be 600 new students. We should have 12 or 13 more out-of-state students, and these would come from the Washington D. C., New York and Chicago areas,
With the expected 600 new students and 750 returnees, enrollment for fall should be 1350 to 1400.
Meeting adjourned.
