Minutes

PRESENT: Messrs. APPLETON, BEARDSLEE, CHERNO, CLARKE, COLLINS, GALLOWAY, HADEN, HAMMERLE, HETENYI, HEUBEL, HILDUM, HOLMES, HOOPES, HUCKER, MAHER, MATTHEWS, MCKAY, MOBLEY, OBEAR, O'DOWD, POPE, ROOSE, SEIKEN, SELLS, SIMMONS, SIMONS, STOUTENBURG, STUBBLEFIELD, SUSSKIND, SWANSON, TOMBOULIAN, VARNER, Mrs. WHITE, WILDER, WILLIAMSON.
ABSENT: Messrs. BRUNO, BURDICK, SCHWAB, TAFOYA.
GUESTS: Messrs. JENKINS AND TIPLER.

The meeting was called to order at 4:10 p.m. by Chancellor Varner.

MINUTES OF THE SENATE MEETING OF APRIL 1st

Mr. Wilder stated that Chancellor Varner's statement made March 25th regarding the selection of individuals for honorary degrees was reported inaccurately, and should be corrected to read: "The procedure used for choosing the individuals for honorary degrees was used for this commencement only, and I propose that at subsequent commencements Oakland University might consider granting no more than three honoraries chosen as follows:

(a) The speaker
(b) A distinguished educator to be chosen by the Senate. 
(c) An individual whose efforts have fostered the growth of the university to be chosen by the Chancellor.

Because some members of the Senate had not received the minutes of April 1st the approval of these minutes was put over to the next meeting of the Senate.

NEW BUSINESS

Mr. O'Dowd moved, "The Faculty of Oakland University nominates 146 undergraduates to receive the bachelors degree in course to be awarded at the First Commencement on Saturday, April 20, 1963." Seconded by Mr. Stubblefield. Approved.

Mr. Hammerle moved, "that all votes dealing with graduation at this meeting be made final". Seconded by Mr. Stubblefield. Approved.

Mr. Roose moved, "That University Honors be awarded to the highest standing 10% of the graduating class as indicated in the attached memorandum." and "That Departmental Honors be awarded in accordance with the departmental recommendations listed in the attached memorandum." Seconded by Mr. Obear.

Mr. Hetenyi recommended that Betty C. Crone's name be removed from the list of University Honors because she has not completed her teaching internship.

Mr. Appleton moved to "suspend the rules in order to allow free discussion on the University Honors list." Seconded by Mr. Stubblefield. Approved.

Mr. Maher moved the adoption of the University Honors list exclusive of Betty C. Crone. Seconded by Mr. Roose. Approved.

Mr. Tomboulian moved to, "delete the secondary teacher designation from Elaine Garwood's name on the University Honors list." Seconded by Mr. Hetenyi. Approved.

Mr. Tomboulian moved to, "add the name of Larry Warner to the Cum Laude section of the University Honors list. Seconded by Mr. Obear. Approved.

Mr. Clarke stated his interest in having Howard H. Hinkel's name added to the Departmental Honors list in Latin.

Mr. Hoopes moved to amend the Departmental Honors list, "to show Howard H. Hinkel as receiving Departmental Honors in English Language and Literature and in Latin." Seconded by Mr. Clarke. Approved.

Mr. Pope moved the question on the motion regarding the Departmental Honors list. Seconded by Mr. Susskind. Approved.

The Departmental Honors list with amendment was then approved.

Mr. Hucker moved to, "delete the words Language and Literature following the word English under the caption Department on the Departmental Honors list." Seconded by Mr. Stubblefield. Approved.

Mr. Hammerle moved that, "the approved University Honors and Departmental Honors lists be kept confidential in order that they may be announced through the commencement program at the time of the graduation ceremonies."

Seconded by Mr. Collins. Approved.
