Mr. Roose, reporting for the Steering Committee, presented a new charge to the Publications Committee as a new item of business. Mr. Roose moved, seconded by Mr. Simmons, to accept the charge as presented in the April 20 agenda. Action will be taken at the next meeting. The charge is "To consider and recommend policies for all student publications and University publications and advise the individuals responsible for them. The Publications Committee will consist of five members, one of whom will be from the staff of the Development, Alumni and Community Engagement Office."
Item 2-a (See April 25 minutes) "Special Policies Concerning Graduation Requirements and University Course Prescriptions for Students Entering Before Fall 1961" as moved and seconded at the previous meeting was adopted.
Item 2-b (See April 25 minutes) was adopted.
In discussing item 2-c, the question arose as to whether this referred to courses in the department or courses specified by the department. Mr. Hammerle asked what methods the Committee had devised for carrying out these requirements. The individual departments will certify whether or not a student has fulfilled the major requirements. This could postpone the decision until the senior year. This proposal would permit any department to refuse to allow any student to continue if he has below a 2.0 average.
Mr. Tomboulian moved an amendment that a student will be placed on probation in his major if his grade point average in the course requirements in his major drops below 2.0. The student on probation must raise his average to 2.0 in the next semester or two more courses in the major, whichever comes last. Seconded by Mr. Matthews. Not Adopted
Mr. Matthews moved an amendment that a student must earn at least a 2.0 average in the courses defined by the department as required for a major. Seconded by Mr. Galloway. Withdrawn.
Mr. Matthews moved an amendment that a student must earn at least a 2.0 average in those courses defined by the department as required for a major, these courses not to include corequisites. Seconded by Mr. Galloway. Withdrawn.
Mr. Matthews moved an amendment that a student earn at least a 2.0 average in all courses attempted in the major field of study, exclusive of prerequisite and corequisite courses. Seconded by Mr. Tomboulian. Mr. McKay moved to amend the amendment to exclude the last phrase (exclusive of prerequisite and corequisite courses). Seconded by Mr. Tomboulian. Not Adopted. Mr. Matthews amendment not adopted. The original motion, c-2, (See April 25 minutes) not adopted.
Mr. Tomboulian moved that the Academic Affairs Committee restudy this problem. Seconded by Mr. Hanmerle. Adopted.
Mr. Fitzsimmons moved the following amendment to item 2-d (See April 25 minutes): A student meeting the prescribed qualifications for Major Standing may be refused by the department only with the concurrence of the Committee on Instruction. Seconded by Mr. Tomboulian. Adopted. The original motion with the amendment was then adopted.
Item 2-e (See April 25 minutes) was adopted. The matter of comprehensive examinations was referred to the Steering Committee for further study.
The amendment to item 2-f (See April 25 minutes) was not adopted. The original motion was not adopted.
