June 14, 1961
Minutes
PRESENT: MESSRS: BEARDSLEE, COLLINS, HAMMERLE, HETENYI, HOOPES, HEUBEL, MATTHEWS, MCKAY, O'DOWD, STOUTENBURG, TAFOYA, VARNER, WILDER
ABSENT: MESSRS: GALLOWAY, SCHWAB, TAULBEE, WISNER
The meeting was called to order by Chancellor Vamer and the minutes of the June 2, 1961 Senate meeting were approved with the following corrections:
1. Paragraph 1, page 2 the last sentence was changed to read, "following an extended discussion, Mr. Galloway withdrew his amendment by unanimous consent.''
2. Paragraph 2, page 2, line 2 the word "courses" following the word "University" was changed to read "course".
Mr. Wilder stated the library staff had drawn up a suggested procedure for acquisitions operation on a limited budget. He proposed that this be discussed with the Library Committee and then disseminated to the faculty for discussion in the fall. Messrs. Heubel and McKay were added to the Library Committee for the summer in order to have representation on the Committee in the Science and Social Science fields respectively.
Mr. Stoutenburg moved "That the following probationary policy be adopted by MSUO to become effective Fall Semester, 1961:
1. a. A freshman or sophomore will be suspended from the University if his cumulative GPA is less than 1.00.
b. A freshman or sophomore will be placed on probation if his cumulative GPA is less than 1.60 (and at least 1.00).
c. Neither la nor 1b will apply until a student has attempted 4 courses (16 credits).
2. a. A junior or senior will be suspended from the university if his cumulative GPA is less than 1.85.
b. A junior or senior will be placed on probation if his cumulative GPA is less than 2.00 (and at least 1.85).
c. For the purposes of probation and academic suspension, a student becomes a junior as soon as he has received grades in 16 courses (64 credits).
3. a. A student placed on probation who remains on probation after he has attempted four more courses will be suspended from the University.
b. All students on probation are required to have an interview with the Dean of Students or his representative.
4. a. All academic suspensions are subject to review by the following Retention Committee; the Dean of Students (chairman), the Dean of the University. the Divisional Associate Deans, and the Director of Admissions.
b. If the Retention Committee so stipulates, the cumulative GPA of a suspended freshman or sophomore who returns to the University may be computed without Including his previous record.
c. All suspended students returning to the University will be placed on probation immediately.
5. A cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 is required for graduation."
Seconded by Mr. Hammerle.
Mr. Hammerle moved to amend the motion to substitute the words "suspended or separated" for the word "suspended" in paragraphs la. 2a. and 3a. In addition, he amended the notion to substitute the words "suspension or separation" for the word "suspension" in paragraphs 2c and 4a. Seconded by Nr. Hoopes. Approved..
Mr. Hammerle moved to amend paragraph 2c by eliminating the words "received grades in" and substitute the word "attempted". Seconded by Mr. Beardslee. Approved. .
Mr. Hammerle moved to add a paragraph 4d as follows: "Specific conditions of each academic suspension or separation will be set by the Retention Committee." Seconded by Mr. Hoopes. Approved.
Mr. Matthews moved to add a paragraph 6 as follows; "After completing 8 courses (32 credits), a student whose cumulative GPA is above a 1.60 but below a 2.00 will be sent a letter of warning outlining the University's probation, suspension, and separation policy." Seconded by Mr. Heubel. Approved.
The original motion with amendments and additions was approved.
