Minutes

PRESENT: Messrs: Amann, Appleton, Beardslee, Burke, Mrs. Caulkins, Cherno, Clarke, Mrs. June Collins, W, S. Collins, Eklund, Fromm, Galloway, Hammerle, Hetenyi, Heubel, Holmes, Hoopes, Mrs. Kovach, Lepley, G. Matthews, McKay, Miss North, Obear, O'Dowd, Pearson, Rhode, Mrs. Rothschild, Schwab, Mrs. Gloria Shapiro, S. Shapiro, Shishkoff, Simmons, Miss Stevenson, Stoutenburg, Susskind, Tafoya, Tomboulian, Mrs. Urla, Varner, Mrs. White, Wilder

Chancellor Vamer opened the meeting by asking if there were to be any proxy votes. The following proxy votes were designated to be given by the following people:

Mr. Tafoya for Mrs. Rothschild and Messrs. Amann and Clarke after they left the meeting because of previous commitments.
Mrs. White for Mr. Fitzsimmons
Mr. Tomboulian for Mr. Obear
Mrs. Kovach for Mrs. Popluiko

Mr. Hoopes moved and Mr. Simmons seconded that the minutes from the February 25 meeting be approved. Minutes adopted.

Mr. Cherno stated his desire to act on items three and four of his May 29, 1961 memorandum to the Academic Senate as a first order of business. Mr. Vamer, Chairman, expressed his willingness to do so if no objections were offered. None were and Mr. Cherno proceeded to move "That students seeking certification in Elementary Education under the classification Group I, General Classroom Teachers, be regarded in the same light as Liberal Arts Science majors insofar as the University Course Math/Science requirement is concerned," Seconded by Mr. McKay.

Mr. Cherno then read his comments on the motion as stated in his May 29 memo.

Mr. Matthews reported that this was unanimously passed by the Committee on Instructions. Approved.

Mr. Cherno moved "That in all major programs where total course requirements (University Course prescriptions, courses required for departmental majors and co-requisites, and professional courses) exceed the minimum graduation requirement of 31 courses, the student may elect to be exempted from one University Course selected from the Western Literature, Art, and Music prescriptions." Seconded by Mr. McKay. Mr. Chemo then offered his comments from his May 29 memo.

Mr. Hammerle moved to amend the motion to read "That in those major programs where present total course requirements (University Course prescriptions, courses required for departmental majors and co-requisites, and professional courses) exceed the minimum graduation requirement of 31 courses, the student may elect to be exempted from one University Course selected from the Western Literature. Art, and Music prescriptions." Seconded by Mr. Shapiro. Approved.

Meeting recessed until a later date because of time.
