MINUTES OF FACULTY MEETING
A faculty Meeting was held on October 9th at 4:00 p.m. in the East Conference room. There were 18 members present.
Dean Hoopes appointed an Interim Committee on Instruction as follows: Tafoya, Gherity, Matthews, McKay, Hammerle, and Hoopes (Chairman). The purpose of the Committee is to set up sophomore course offerings and to develop curriculum for the following years. Each member of the Committee should meet with other instructors in his subjects and thus receive recommendations from all of the faculty.
Dean Hoopes stated that recruiting will have to be spread out to all faculty members and asked their help.
Dean Hoopes also asked the faculty to express their feelings on departments and on the type of voting body they favored. (Should the voting power be with associate professors and higher ranks only? etc.)
During the meeting the following problems were brought up to be handled by the Committee: departments, grade points, washouts, college entrance board, junior year English competence exam, comprehensive exam at end of freshman year in order to advance to sophomore year, advance to sophomore year, admission of students without high school diplomas.
It was agreed that the Committee of Instruction is to discuss with the faculty at various times the issues which must be decided. Mr. Matthews asked, "Who is the faculty?" Is it the entire teaching staff or a body specially selected or elected?
It was brought up that in some universities the teaching staff has a straw vote, one which must be ratified by a council or senate composed of faculty members of professorial rank.
Mr. McKay advised that instructors should not be discriminated against. He felt they should be given the same status as assistant professors and full professors.
It was agreed that for the moment formal action on this will be postponed.
The new instructions covering long distance telephone calls were handed out.
Dean Hoopes is to take up with Mr. Stoutenburg the matters of a book listing the faculty and a university calendar.
The faculty was advised that Mr. Varner and Dean Hoopes would like to visit classes. A discussion followed. It was decided that Mr. Varner and any other person wishing to visit a class or classes would give advance notice of so desiring, and that any member of the faculty is free to extend or refuse permission.
The meeting adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
