Students who believe their skills warrant higher placement may complete the following placement packet.
If you believe you are a strong writer and would like to demonstrate your abilities, we urge you to submit this placement packet of two samples of your writing. Please follow these directions and submit your packet as soon as possible, but no later than two weeks prior to your orientation session. Placement packet results will be available for you at orientation and prior to your registration. Be sure to complete both parts of the packet.
Part 1: Reflections on Writing (about 500 words, 2-3 double-spaced typed pages)
In a Word document, provide a brief essay in which you describe yourself as a writer. Your overall goal in this writing is to make clear why you believe your placement should be different from that based on your ACT English score. Discuss your prior writing experiences, both good and bad. Include in your reflection a discussion of any writing courses you have already attempted at OU or other colleges, which course you have currently been placed into, and why you should be placed into the next higher course.
Part 2: Extended Essay (about 500-800 words, 2-3 double-spaced typed pages)In a second Word document, respond to the following topic by taking a clear position and supporting it with evidence from your personal experience or knowledge.
Choose one (1) of the following topics:
A) Scholars have suggested that the development of the Internet will have as much impact on our society as the printing press when it was invented. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
B) In response to problems like shoplifting and disruptive behavior, some shopping malls have decided to ban teen shoppers in groups of three or more. Analyze this decision from the perspective of both teens and store owners and present your own view.
C) Some people think the purpose of a college education is to prepare for a specific career while others feel college is meant to prepare people to be active participants in our society. Compare these purposes and others that may be important to you.
