Infection Prevention & Control
Oakland University is committed to providing a healthy and safe environment for all students, faculty, staff and visitors. To that end, the university's Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) committee proactively educates and trains individuals in the prevention and control of infectious diseases as well as the potential for widespread health emergencies.

Several Non-Pharmaceutical Intervention (NPI) behaviors have been identified by the Health and Human Services (HHS) as well as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) for the prevention and control of communicable disease. The NPI behaviors and vaccines include:

  • Hand Hygiene – Frequent hand washing for 15-20 seconds with soap and water and the use of hand sanitizers when soap and water are not readily available.
  • Cough Etiquette – To help stop the spread of germs and avoid the contamination of hands,
    • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
    • If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
    • Put your used tissue in the waste basket.
  • Flu Vaccine – The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year.

  • Social Distancing – Reduce contacts with infected persons whenever possible.  Avoid crowds and any close contact when ill.

  • Personal and Family Preparedness PlansYou and your family come first. Promote preparedness at home and at work.
