Text messaging
Who can receive text message alerts?
Anyone with a valid Oakland University e-mail address and Grizz ID may sign up to receive text message alerts. To
begin the sign-up process, you must have your OU e-mail address and Grizz ID.
How do I sign up for the text message alert system?
Visit the
Emergency Notification website to provide your contact information. You may input one cell phone number for text alerts, and up to two off-campus phone numbers for voice alerts. Voice alerts may be sent to land lines or cell phones, and you may elect to receive text and voice alerts for the same phone number. You do not need to enter your OU campus residence phone number (except Matthews Court) or OU office phone number for voice alerts, as our earlier system for sending campus-wide voice alerts will remain operational.
How do I change my phone number or unsubscribe from the text message alert system?
Visit the
Emergency Notification website to change or delete your contact information.
What phone number will appear on my caller ID when I receive an emergency voice alert from OU?
Voice alert messages will come from OU's main phone number, (248) 370-2100.
Will my phone ring when I receive an emergency voice alert?
Yes. Emergency voice alerts sent to off-campus phones via the text message alert system will come through as normal calls to the numbers you provide during the sign-up process. Your phone will ring, and upon answering you will be prompted to press 1 on your keypad to listen to the emergency alert. On-campus phones, including student residences, will continue to receive voicemail broadcasts in the event of an emergency.
Does it cost money for me to receive text message alerts from OU?
You will not pay a fee to
join the text message alert network. However, your cellular phone plan may require you to pay a nominal fee for each message received. If OU sends a text message alert, you may be responsible for those charges from your carrier. Because we will only implement text messaging alerts in the event of imminent danger, as well as a test message at the start of each semester, the number of messages you receive from OU will be extraordinarily low.
How many text messages will I receive in the event of an emergency?
Oakland University will use the text message alert system in the event of imminent danger to our campus community, a university closure or a campuswide cancellation of classes. We will send a text message to notify you of such situations, and necessary updates may be sent via text until the danger has passed. However, because of the limited length of text messages, full and updated information will be posted to Oakland University's website as soon as it is available. If you receive a text message alert, you should go to
www.oakland.edu for details, and you should continue to check the website for updates.
In addition, OU will run a test of the text messaging system at the start of each semester. You will receive one message at this time. Testing is critical to ensure text message notifications are being delivered to each recipient who wishes to receive them.
Will the contact information I provide for the text messaging alert system be used for any other purpose?
No. The text messaging alert system is completely separate from all other OU databases, and information from your 3n account will never be shared or utilized for any other purpose but emergency notifications. Therefore, if you alert OU to a change in your cell phone number via SAIL, you must also change your number at the
Emergency Notification website to continue to receive text message alerts.
