Autism Safety Management for
Families
Hosted by Oakland University Center for Autism. Presenters:
Sgt. Scott Schuelke (Ret), Lansing Police Department; Staci Rulison, Parent,
Autism Alliance of Michigan. Sgt. Schuelke and Ms. Rulison are known for their
knowledge, dedication, insight and passion and are great partners in the autism
community. Everyone will walk away with ideas and plans designed to lower risk
and increase safety for every child or adult living on the spectrum.
During
this presentation we will discuss:
• Wandering, • Safety at home, on campus
and when traveling, • 911 data base alerts, • Developing an autism emergency
plan, • Sharing de-escalation techniques, • Reducing victimization, • Developing
partnerships with law enforcement and first response agencies. Who should
attend: Parents, Caregivers, Educators, Community members.

Parents and Caregivers Support Group
Parents and caregivers who have a child or children with Autism Spectrum
Disorder are invited to attend this support group. We will discuss the
various types of interventions, IEPs and METs, diagnosis, behavioral
concerns, how to help sibling and others understand the child with ASD
and many other topics. This group meets on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of
the month. There is no charge to attend.

Biology of Autism, by David Amaral, Ph.D. Distinguished professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and director of research, University of California - David MIND Institute. Dr. Amaral's resaerch includes TheAutism Phenome Project, the largest and most comprehensive assesment of children with autism.
Neurobiology of Autism, by Margaret Bauman M.D. Associate professor of neurology, Harvard Medical School; director of LADDERS (Learning and Developmental Disabilities and Rehabilitation Services); a distinguished pediatric neurologist and research investigator who has been a pioneer i the study and treatment of autism for more than 25 years.
Biomedical Interventions in Autism by Anju Usma M.D Director of True Health Medical Center, specializing in biomedical interventions for children with autism.
Individuals interested may include: pediatricians, doctors, dentists, nurses, physician assistants, physical therapists, students in the fields of autism or medicine, educators, caregivers, parents and advocates, anyone interested in learning more about autism.
