Message from the Provost
It is with immense pleasure that I extend a warm welcome on behalf of the Division of Academic Affairs.
I would like to draw your attention to a recent update about the Academic Affairs that I presented to the campus community. Kindly take time to visit the State of Academic Affairs page.
Over the last decade, Oakland University has experienced substantial growth in its wide-ranging academic programs, including record enrollment topping 18,500 students, expanded degree and certificate programs, and an enhanced reputation in our Michigan community and workplace. This past year we renovated many instructional laboratories to provide state-of-the-art facilities that will enhance our students’ learning experience. In addition, the Board of Trustees recently approved construction of a Human Health Building on our campus to meet the professional and academic needs of the School of Nursing and the School of Health Sciences. In addition, we have made significant progress in preparing for the accreditation of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine – a transformative initiative that has energized the campus and the entire region.
While the university has shown impressive growth and change, the core academic mission has stayed the same: to deliver an outstanding education that prepares students with a portfolio of skills and values necessary for leadership and success in the workplace and society.
Oakland University’s institutional priorities, developed and embraced by the university community, identifies the importance of diversity, quality faculty, dedicated staff and inspired students. Our faculty immerse themselves in providing the most constructive teaching and learning environment; engaging in original basic and applied research and scholastic inquiry; and promoting and participating in creative works.
The campus community is proud of the numerous national accolades and recognition that our faculty has received for achievements in instructional leadership, including the Distinguished Michigan Teacher of the Year award. And, as a Carnegie doctoral research institution, Oakland University prides itself in creating and dispensing new knowledge. External funding for faculty-sponsored research projects is on the rise. We are also very pleased to welcome an outstanding roster of new faculty joining the University in 2010-2011. These expert educators will make significant contributions to moving the institution to its next level of excellence.
The hallmark of an Oakland experience is the opportunity for students to participate in faculty-sponsored research and creative works. In the College of Arts and Sciences, and in the professional schools, numerous internally- and externally-funded research projects involve students during summer months or the entire academic year. Students make presentations on their findings at local, national and international conferences and symposia, and many become published authors with their faculty mentors. Please visit the university Research Office website to explore your research interest or to provide support for projects and travel.
Through its many fine programs, Oakland University is preparing its graduates to meet academic, social and economic challenges – we invite you to join us in this endeavor.
