Making An Impact

Below, some of our Galileo Leadership Academy graduates share their personal stories of teacher leadership.

The Galileo Leadership Institute is based on the knowledge, skills and strategies tested and refined during the eight years of the Galileo Leadership Academy, funded in part by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. Evaluation studies of the Galileo Leadership Academy indicated that more that 70% of the 265 Galileo teacher-leaders have assumed leadership roles beyond their daily teaching responsibilities. The leadership roles assumed include:

    *    school improvement/NCA chairs
    *    
grade-level team leaders
    *    subject area coordinator
    *    district-level committee/professional development work
    *    a variety of leadership roles in professional associations and unions

As a result of participating in the Galileo Leadership Academy, 30% of the leaders have pursued advanced degrees.


Through action research, Galileo leaders are contributing to the profession's knowledge base of instructional best practice by disseminating results of their studies through presentations at local, state and national conferences as well as publications in educational journals.

The involvement of teachers in the debate about school reform has spurred an unprecedented focus on the need for teacher leadership.  During the past decade, teachers began to assert their own version of leadership--one that differs from administrative or managerial versions.  Adam Urbanski and Mary Beth Nickolaou's article Reflections on Teachers as Leaders (Educational Policy, 11(1), 243-254) shares important lessons from emerging models of teacher leadership and suggests key policy implications.
