FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DEAN

Dean Gallien bids, "Farewell"

As the 2012-2013 school year comes to a close, we would like to thank Dean Gallien for his many contributions to the School of Education and Human Services. As you probably know, Dean Gallien has accepted a position with Appalachian State as the Dean of the Reich School of Education.  He and his family will be heading back to Boone, North Carolina shortly after his last day at Oakland University at the end of next month. Best of luck, Dr. Gallien!

A note from Dr. Gallien:

Thank you, dear colleagues, for your excited congratulations and many best wishes. I have so enjoyed my time with you here at Oakland University! My family and I are looking forward to this new chapter in our lives.

All the best,

LBG

Tanya Christ, Ph.D., Explores Young Children's Engagement with Multimodal Text

Tanya Christ, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in RLA, has been working with young students to analyze their comprehension and use of multimodal text. She
and her research partner, X. Christine Wang from the University at Buffalo, received a Spencer Foundation Grant for their project entitled "Exploring Young Children's Engagement with Multimodal Text." This year-long project will explore how how young children develop understandings about how digital text works and use digital text features to construct meaning.

Best of luck with your research, Dr. Christ!

73rd Annual Statewide Special Education Conference

On March 13-15, 2013, Nick Lauer, Ph.D.,
Visiting Assistant Professor in HDCS, attended the 73rd Annual Statewide Special Education Conference put on by the Michigan Council for Exceptional Children. The conference was held in Grand Rapids, MI and Dr. Lauer presented his work, The Barriers to Home and School Collaboration: Children with ASD.

Dr. Lauer discussed what collaboration is and is not from historical and modern points of view. He then discussed three major barriers to home and school collaboration and partnerships. The first he labeled "The Misunderstood", which involved the education of parents about the school and special education process. He emphasized that educators often take this for granted, but shouldn't. The second barrier he called "The Unspoken", which are thoughts and fears that both educators and parents have. This included a discussion on defense mechanisms, particularly denial. The last barrier Dr. Lauer referred to as "The Spoken", which involved a rethinking of anger as a secondary emotion.

Thank you, Dr. Lauer, for representing Oakland University so well!

TECH TIPS

Password privacy, please!

Your password is what identifies you on a network and, because of that, you should never give it to anyone. While that bit of advice might sound trite and obvious, the fact remains that some people will freely give their password to friends and co-workers or even online forms that request such information!

Remember: no legitimate source will ever ask you to provide your personal password. No one, not even technical service providers, should ever ask you for your password...ever! Also, don't offer your password to a technology service provider while you're getting assistance, no matter how convenient it may seem. It puts you and your personal information at risk while also putting your provider in a very awkward position.
