| 73rd Annual Statewide Special Education Conference |
| |
On March 13-15, 2013, Nick Lauer, Ph.D., Visiting Assistant Professor in HDCS, attended the 73rd Annual Statewide Special Education Conference put on by the Michigan Council for Exceptional Children. The conference was held in Grand Rapids, MI and Dr. Lauer presented his work, The Barriers to Home and School Collaboration: Children with ASD.
Dr. Lauer discussed what collaboration is and is not from historical and modern points of view. He then discussed three major barriers to home and school collaboration and partnerships. The first he labeled "The Misunderstood", which involved the education of parents about the school and special education process. He emphasized that educators often take this for granted, but shouldn't. The second barrier he called "The Unspoken", which are thoughts and fears that both educators and parents have. This included a discussion on defense mechanisms, particularly denial. The last barrier Dr. Lauer referred to as "The Spoken", which involved a rethinking of anger as a secondary emotion.
Thank you, Dr. Lauer, for representing Oakland University so well!
