         March 2013

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DEAN

As winter is gasping its last breaths, spring is right around the corner! For all of us, this portends graduation, cementing summer vacation plans, and reflecting on our accomplishments, all while looking forward to our summer endeavors.

I am very pleased with the status of hiring new faculty members for next year. As of now, we have hired three young faculty members from Vanderbilt, Virginia, and The University of Michigan; three top-ranked graduate Schools of Education in the United States.

As my excitement builds for what we have to come, I reflect with great satisfaction on our productive winter months. Winter College is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated events on the alumni calendar. It is not merely an escape from our harsh Michigan winter, but rather it is an opportunity to experience the teachings of the exemplary professors of Oakland University. The vast array of topics - ranging from health to economics to personal relationships - engenders excitement for Oakland's future. It doesn't hurt that this all takes place in beautiful Bonita Springs, Florida!

This was my second year attending Winter College and I can truly say that it is one of the most effective venues for interacting with OU alumni. It is quite easy to engage new people on a meaningful level when surrounded by magnificent weather, delicious food, and leisurely conversation. The Development Office has done an outstanding job in orchestrating this wonderful event and, as such, it is my goal to have our faculty participate in speaking engagements there every year! Please direct your inquiries to me or David Tindall if you are interested in attending this event on behalf of SEHS next year.

Together,
LBG

Dr. Tanya Christ Receives Two Grants in February

Tanya Christ, Assistant Professor in Reading and Language Arts, received two grants last month. The first was an International Reading Association Elva Knight Research Grant of $8,000 to research "Emergent Readings of Digital Texts," with studies being conducted in schools in Michigan and New York.

Tanya also received a mini-grant from the MEEMIC Foundation, which will be used to purchase iPads and eBooks for use with students at the Baldwin Center in Pontiac, Michigan.

Congratulations to Tanya as her hard work and dedication have paid off!

  The Promising Practices Network

The Promising Practices Network (PPN) has completed a new review of Reading Recovery Early Intervention research. Based on a study conducted by Professor Robert Schwartz, of the Reading and Language Arts Department, this organization has changed their rating from a promising program to a proven program. The PPN review found that on a measure of text reading level (similar to measures that many school districts use to judge student progress in early grades) the Reading Recovery group increased their initial performance by 19 times, compared to 6 times by the control group (http://www.promisingpractices.net/program.asp?programid=69).

  Avondale District Kindergarten Parent Night
Dr. Tanya Christ's preservice teachers, currently enrolled in the RDG 414 literacy methods course, created video presentations to show parents what they could do to help prepare their children for kindergarten. They then presented and discussed these videos with parents across Kindergarten Parent Nights for three schools in the Avondale District: Auburn Elementary, Deerfield Elementary, and Graham Elementary. These videos will also be posted on the Auburn Elementary website as a parent resource.

Thanks to these preservice teachers for representing SEHS and OU so well!

Portal Writing (Leigh, 2010; 2012; 2013) is an aesthetic writing strategy for re-seeing, re-imagining, and re-creating story ideas from unfinished, often abandoned, drafts. In this latest chapter Portal Writing: Helping Writers Re-Think Their Writing, Leigh guides teachers through a creative revision process to help students improve their writing through the use of portals (i.e. circled words) and redacted text. Also included in this chapter are three adaptations of portal writing for struggling writers, English Language Learners, and advanced writers.

L'Anse Creuse High School and OU

On February 28th the Department of Teacher Development and Educational Studies hosted a small group of high school students from the L'Anse Creuse Public Schools along with their companions – high school students from China. The American students are studying Mandarin, and the students from China were spending their mid-winter break in the district.

The students from China visited OU to get a sense of campus life at an American university as some of them hope to come here to attend college. They listened to a presentation by OU Admission Advisers, went on a tour of campus, and had lunch in the Vandenberg cafeteria.

The TDES Department is about to begin an interational program in partnership with the Oxford School District and BCC International, a Beijing company that facilitates these partnerships. This program will bring college graduates from China to the United States and prepare them to become teachers of Mandarin while working in American schools.

The L'Anse Creuse visit is one more way the department is expanding its connection to the local school districts and to the international community.

Young Adult Literacy Luncheon

The Department of Reading and Language Arts sponsored the Young Adult Literacy luncheon at the Michigan Reading Association Conference on March 9, 2013. Today his research and advocacy are aimed at advancing the literacy development of adolescents, and especially African American boys in urban communities. Dr. Tatum is the author of the NCTE James N. Britton Award–winning Teaching Reading to Black Adolescent Males, and an associate professor in the Literacy, Language, and Culture Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the Director of the UIC Reading Clinic, and a former middle school teacher and reading specialist.

Educational partnership to help advance cultural, economic ties to China

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson was in attendance on Monday, March 4, 2013 to help formally announce the SEHS partnership with Oxford Community Schools and BCC International Education Group. These three organizations will work together to create a program in which teaching students from China will come to Oakland University to complete master of arts in teaching degrees, while teaching Mandarin Chinese language to students throughout Oakland County.

The program will begin this fall when the Chinese teaching students begin their work in the county's 28 school districts that offer Mandarin Chinese language classes. These students will be advancing their own education while helping local youth develop an ability to understand and interact with people from China, as well as a broad worldview that values conscientious global citizenship.

TECH TIPS

Sneaky Software

It might surprise many people that the user installs an overwhelming majority of the malicious software that infects their computer systems.

Often, this happens while installing a legitimate program update or downloading a program from the Internet. Companies will often have arrangements with service providers, like Yahoo or Ask.com, which will automatically install a tool bar or similar utility program. If you look carefully while you're installing, you may see a check box that is selected by default and tells you that they will also be installing additional software. It's always a good idea to read all disclaimers and other instructions carefully to insure that you are only downloading the software you intended to. A little attention when you are updating or installing freeware will go a long way in keeping your computer problem free!
