K-12 STEM Camps

One-week camps for upper elementary, middle school, and high schools for students who do or might have an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Mathematics (STEM). The students will be taken through a series of hands-on, student-centered experiences where they will learn a little bit about what each of the engineering fields do, build and test equipment and conduct experiments in the various disciplines that include all of STEM; including:

Topics may include, but are not limited to (some of these are weather dependent and usually not every single one of these are done although most are):

Alternative Energy: Build and test solar cells made from powdered donuts and blackberry juice!

Alternative Energy: Build a battery using household items

Alternative Energy: Build your own wind turbine

Energy: Build a colorimeter and measure energy content of potato chips

Energy: Build an oil lamp and a Thomas Edison light bulb from common household items

Energy: Build a steam boiler to operate a wheel and blow a steam whistle

Structures: Just like spacecraft landing on Mars, students will build structures that cushion impact of an egg dropped from a high location

Structures: Students will learn to and will build bridges to distribute loads

Industrial and Systems: Take part in an assembly line manufacturing process, find improvements

Electrical: Will build parallel and series circuits using flashlight bulbs and batteries

Electrical: Will levitate pencils using ring magnets

Electric: Student will design and build their own speakers using common household items

Electrical: Build flying machines that take video.

Computer Engineering: Learn about components (motherboards, ram, hard drive, cpu, etc) and build your own computer from scratch

Computer Science: Load an operating system onto a new computer

Computer Science: Program LEGO Robots to navigate around obstacles

Typical Agenda:

Monday (Mechanical Engineering Day): Introductions, what is STEM?, the jobs marketplace

Tuesday (Electrical Engineering Day): Build circuits, lemon batteries, experiment with magnetism, use lemons to power lights

Wednesday (Computer Science and Engineering Day): Build computers from scratch, learn how the components work, program robots to perform tasks

Thursday (Industrial and Systems Engineering Day): take part and make improvements in an assembly line manufacturing process

Friday: Campus technology tour

  • Alternative energy projects
  • Clean Energy Research Center (CERC)
  • Chrysler robotics lab
  • Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) lab
  • Ground robotics student lab
  • Aerial vehicles student team demo
  • Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Formula 1 assembly garage

Also, student project presentations, awarding of certificates and closing ceremony.
