FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DEAN

Dear Colleagues:

To the right is a picture of our new cottage in the mountains - to tempt you to visit us if you are ever in the Highlands of North Carolina!

Actually, my wife and I were commenting on our return to Rochester this past weekend about how much we have enjoyed our three years in Michigan. We were privileged to have experienced parts of the state that I had never visited during my childhood years. In addition to my son obtaining a solid high school education and my wonderful experience here with SEHS, we do indeed leave with fond memories.

Again, best of fortune to all of you and allow me to express my sincere gratitude for choosing me as your rookie Dean.

Best regards,
Louis

ACCOLADES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Annual Faculty Recognition Awards Honor Excellence

Each year, Oakland University honors academic excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service with the annual Faculty Recognition Luncheon. This year's event was held on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, in the Oakland Center.

The luncheon is traditionally held on Founder's Day, which honors university benefactors Alfred and Matilda Dodge Wilson. The Dodges donated their 1,500-acre estate, along with $2 million, to Michigan State University to establish a satellite school in 1957. The campus was renamed Oakland University in time for the graduation of its first class of students in 1963.

"This recognition of the outstanding work that Oakland University faculty perform is one of the most important activities of the university," said Dr. Susan Awbrey, Interim Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.

"It is through the work of our knowledgeable and dedicated faculty that our students succeed, research goals are met, we serve the needs of our communities, and Oakland University's reputation grows in distinction. Congratulations to all being honored."

The following SEHS faculty were honored at this special luncheon:

Mark S. Doman, J.D.

Special Instructor of Education
Area of Recognition: Excellence in Teaching

C. Suzanne Klein, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Education
Area of Recognition: Service

S. Rebecca Leigh, Ph.D.

Cynthia Carver Renamed to Advisory Board/AERA SIG Leader

Cynthia Carver, Ph.D., assistant professor in EL, was asked to continue for another term in her role as an Advisory Board Member with Great Lakes East Comprehensive Center, a division of the American Institute of Research. Great Lakes East provides technical assistance to the Michigan, Ohio and Indiana Departments of Education.

Cynthia also presented at the 2013 AERA conference in San Francisco. She was one of three AERA members who hosted a gathering for those interested in forming a new Special Interest Group (SIG) which would focus on cross-disciplinary studies of teacher leadership. This informal conversation provided an opportunity to connect with colleagues who have a common interest in scholarship about teacher leadership. The gathering drew forty people, with many more sending messages of support. Currently Cindy and her two colleagues are serving as the informal leaders to move the petition process forward, which would culminate in the first formal meeting of the group at the 2014 AERA meeting in Philadelphia. Those interested in the SIG will contribute their thinking to this new endeavor and network with colleagues electronically while the formal process moves forward.

Congratulations to Cynthia!

IN THE NEWS

Upcoming Accreditation Site Visit - TEAC Audit

The teacher education program of the School of Education and Human Services will host a visit to our campus of an accreditation team from the Teacher Education Accreditation Council on June 10th, 11th, and 12th. The School is proud that our teacher education program was the first in Michigan to be accredited by TEAC in 2007, and we are now seeking re-accreditation.

In addition to reviewing curriculum, facilities, and faculty credentials, the TEAC team will meet with students, faculty, cooperating teachers, principals, and university supervisors during the site-visit. Please be on the lookout for an invitation to attend one of these meetings. TEAC values your input and we do too.

You may also receive an invitation to submit comments through email and to respond to a brief survey about our program. We hope you will take advantage of these opportunities. As we went through the self-study process, our campus committee became even more convinced of the high quality of our program - we are sure the TEAC auditors will leave our campus as believers as well.

Our accreditation documents and other information is available online at http://www.oakland.edu/sehs/accreditation. This site will be continually updated leading up to the June 10-12 review. Please visit the site and, if you have any questions about the accreditation process, please contact Professor Bob Wiggins at 248-370-3093 or wiggins@oakland.edu.

South Macomb Social Justice Project

On January 29th, approximately 80 students, teacher leaders and administrators from six south Macomb County school districts gathered at Fitzgerald High School to collectively strategize to create culturally responsive school communities where all students experience success. Bob Maxfield, Eileen Johnson, and Suzanne Klein from EL lead this ongoing project and have recently been joined by Anthony "Tuf" Francis and Emery Petchauer from TDES. Anthony's and Emery's input in the planning process and their work with the dialogue were integral in the development of action plans by each district team.

Examples of the strategies contained in these plans include:
  • Have student/staff interaction meetings in order to continue dialogue
  • Plan and implement informal monthly ice breakers for students and teachers
  • Incorporate more student and staff recognition
  • Provide positive feedback to students on their efforts academically and behaviorally
  • Making teachers more available to students and parents.

Teams plan to reconvene this month to further develop this remarkable and unique project, which can be replicated by other schools and school districts.

TECH TIPS

You are an Integral Part of Computer Support

Few people realize that they are an integral part of the support process. A computer is not like a car where you can leave it at the repair shop, return tomorrow and pick it up all fixed. Here at Pawley Hall we give users unprecedented freedom to configure their machines by giving you administrator rights, but with great power comes great responsibility.

When a support person comes to address an issue with your computer, please don't leave the room. If you don't have time to stay in the vicinity please arrange a time to have the technician come back when you can. Sometimes it's important for you log in with your user name and password, and other times we need you to answer questions about your machine. Not only is your participation helpful and important but you never know, you just might learn something that will save you from needing support in the future.
