Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of its AACSB-accredited School of Business Administration. The position is available on July 1, 2013.
The University
Oakland University is located 30 miles north of Detroit, among the rolling hills and woodlands of Meadow Brook, the former Dodge Wilson estate. Founded in 1957, Oakland University is a vital, growing, state-supported, comprehensive academic institution committed to excellence. With an enrollment of nearly 20,000 students, of whom 3,550 are graduate students, Oakland University delivers a broad range of arts and science, professional and graduate programs, including 139 undergraduate and 127 graduate programs at the master’s and doctoral levels on its more than 1,400-acre campus. The student to faculty ratio is 22 to 1. The University supports more than 200 student organizations and competes in Division 1 athletics. Oakland University’s Strategic Plan articulates a commitment to expanding existing undergraduate and graduate programs, and the development of new graduate programs.
The University is located in Oakland County, which has a population of over 1 million people with per capita incomes among the highest in the United States. Oakland County is home to nearly 50,000 companies, including nearly 300 Fortune 500 companies and the U.S. headquarters of Chrysler Corporation.
The School of Business Administration (SBA) is one of fewer than 178 institutions worldwide (less than 5%) to have earned AACSB accreditation in Business and Accounting, assuring quality and continuous improvement in its programs, faculty and resources. The school offers eight undergraduate majors, an MBA with multiple concentrations, Master of Accounting, Master of Science in Information Technology Management, and Executive MBA with tracks in Health Care Management and Information Systems Leadership programs. The School has four departments (Accounting and Finance, Decision and Information Sciences, Economics, and Management and Marketing). There are currently 65 full-time faculty, 75 part-time faculty, and more than 400 graduate and 2,200 undergraduate students.
The School of Business Administration maintains strong ties with the local business community.
The Dean reports to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The Dean supervises an Associate Dean, four department chairs, the Directors of Applied Technology in Business, EMBA-Health Care Management, and Development, an Assistant to the Dean, and an additional staff of 30 individuals. The Dean manages a budget of $13.5 million.
The Dean provides the academic and administrative leadership to the school that helps shape and support its vision, strategic initiatives, and mission. Toward this goal the Dean works closely with the university’s administration, the school’s administrative staff, faculty, students, alumni, and the community. The school’s strategic initiatives are expected to include growth, innovation, excellence in research and teaching, fundraising, and relationship-building with businesses, the SBA Board of Visitors, alumni, the community and other units of the University. The Dean ensures that operations adhere to the standards required for maintaining AACSB accreditation.
Qualifications
The School of Business Administration is seeking energetic candidates in leadership positions with excellent academic and administrative credentials to support and enhance the school’s stature as a premier business school.
Leading applicants for this position should have:
Minimum Qualifications
- An earned doctorate or equivalent degree in a relevant field
- An academic publication record sufficient to warrant appointment at the rank of full professor in the relevant department within the School of Business Administration
- A minimum of 5 years of administrative experience with personnel and budgetary responsibility
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with AACSB Business and Accounting accreditations
- Experience in strategic management/planning and implementation
- Professional business experience
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in research
- Quality experience with teaching and curriculum design
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- A proven record in successful relationship-building and fundraising
- Experience in partnering with business and other external organizations
Some variation from these requirements may be made for individuals with an outstanding record of academic or business leadership.
