HC 204 War and Peace

Instructor: Geoff Brieger
Course Time: T  5:30-8:50 pm
General Education: Western Civilization
Term: Fall 2013

DESCRIPTION:

We hear a great deal about war, but peace seems to be primarily a rhetorical term for the absence of open conflict. Much of history as commonly taught deals with war. Pacifism has a long and honorable history as well however, and we will explore it. We will also examine the psychological, economic, and sociological reasons advanced for maintaining the culture of war. Having experienced the consequences of war (WW II) as a child, I will be able to relate first-hand the deplorable results. Students will be encouraged to examine their own attitudes toward these issues, and to augment their understanding of the current world situation.

The course format will consist of lectures, discussions, short student presentations, and two longer essays.
