DESCRIPTION
General Objective:
To explore the types, styles and methods of human discovery, whether in the arts or in the sciences, whether discoveries by individuals or discoveries by groups. To explore your own ambitions, and the potential discoveries you might make at university or beyond. To openly consider a range of university subjects, as well as the wider world, the community and the world of commerce. To engage in creative thinking, as well as strive to develop further critical understanding that can be applied to any of your fields of study. To work in groups as well as individually to investigate new ideas.
Specific Objectives:
Students in Making Discoveries will:
A. Engage in creative and critical thinking through listening, reading, watching, and discussing.
B. Recognize and understand resources and resource strategies that can support their ambitions and goals.
C. Respect other opinions, and consider how different viewpoints, disciplines, cultural backgrounds, and even different personalities, might contribute to successful teams and to personal and group aims.
D. Begin to understand and explore the nature of research, what it is and how to do it.
E. Consider concepts of “success” and “failure” and how these might be harnessed.
F. Explore the value of collaboration and the nature of leadership.
G. Come to understand the potential of the university environment and its engagement with the world at large.
H. Develop more advanced writing and speaking skills.
I. Arrive at a broad understanding of exploration and discovery.
