Interim Provost Susan Awbrey called the meeting to order at 3:10 P.M.
INFORMATIONAL ITEMS
1. Appointment of Senate Parliamentarian
Jerry Grossman was appointed Senate Parliamentarian.
2. Appointment of Senate Secretary
Dikka Berven was appointed Senate Secretary.
3. Appointment of Senate Elections Committee
Appointees to the Senate Elections Committee are: Kelley Hay, Lynn Williams, and Liang Fu.
4. Provost Updates -- Interim Provost Susan Awbrey
- Ms. Awbrey reported that bargaining had led to a proposed faculty contract currently undergoing the ratification process.
- Regarding the Commencement ceremonies, Ms. Awbrey reminded Senate members that a committee of faculty and staff had been appointed to review commencement process. The committee subsequently recommended that we have two ceremonies (undergraduate and graduate) at the Palace. Unfortunately, however, the Palace cannot guarantee dates because of playoffs. Therefore commencement ceremonies will take place on campus, and there will be four ceremonies in one day. Technology will be used to enhance the process.
- September 21 is the official opening of the new Human Health Building.
- Groundbreaking for the Engineering Building will be on September 21.
- Ms. Awbrey announced that Tamara Jhashi is the new Acting Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences,and Mary Stein is new Interim Associate Provost.
- Ms. Awbrey thanked Kris Condic and Laila Guessous for serving on the Senate Steering Committee last year, and she welcomed back Henry Aigbedo and Mark Doman to that committee for the upcoming year.

The minutes of the meetings of April 19, 2012 and May 10, 2012 were approved (motion by Mr. Frick, second by Mr. Stano).
B. NEW BUSINESS
- Election of Senate Steering Committee for 2011-2013Senate Elections Committee
The Senate needed to fill a one-semester vacancy on the Senate Steering Committee. Kellie Hay conducted the election. Jay Meehan was unanimously elected to serve. Current membership of the Steering Committee includes: Henry Aigbedo (SBA), Mark Doman (SEHS), Andrea Eis (CAS), Mike Latcha (SECS), and Kris Thompson (SHS).

Mr. Grossman inquired about how the committees were filled because there were faculty members in the Department of Mathematics who had volunteered for a Senate committee, but who had not been selected. Ms. Berven explained that attempts are made make sure that volunteers are able to serve on the committees that they volunteer for if possible, but the way the committees are filled has to do with the needs/vacancies of the committees. Sometimes faculty members volunteer for a Senate committee which does not have an appropriate vacancy. If there are vacancies and multiple volunteers, priority may be given to the first volunteers who fit the categories needed in any given committee. Ms. Berven added that it is helpful if volunteers express their interests but also their flexibility to serve on a Senate committee, even if it is not the one(s) they volunteered for.
The motion to approve the Senate Committee appointments was approved unanimously.
