We offer full time faculty members the ability to host servers in our server room. Faculty should use a virtual machine if they don't have heavy computation requirements, or specific hardware configuration needs. Both options allow the user to have full admin rights and offer similar support levels.
The faculty member should first request the rack space from the CTO, please include some information about what you want and what you intend to use the server for, in an email to secs@oakland.edu. We will confirm if there is space and resources to house your server, and recommend a few hardware choices for you. After you have received approval you can provide us with a fund number and the requested hardware information and we will order it for you. The faculty member will then have Administrative responsibilities over the server.
Restrictions
- Must be rack mountable
- Must be housed in the SECS server room.
- Is subject to security audits
- Requires a supported operating system or approval from the CTO.
- Hardware must be replaced after a 5 year life-cycle.
- Must be joined to the domain
- Users cannot Change the IP or Mac Address of a Network Interface Card on the 141.210.25 network
- Users cannot change the cto or Admin users account's password on your machine
- Users cannot remove the cto user from the admin group in windows, or the admin group for the sudoers file in Linux.
- Users cannot prevent CTO from exporting log data.

- Base O.S install

- Provide ability to login to the machine from campus (depending on the O.S. nx, vnc, remote desktop, ssh)
- Power on, upon request (during business hours)
- Allow access to SECS network drive from computer
- Give requesting professor Administrative rights to the machine
- We reserve the right to remove your machine from the network at our discretion
