How did I get identified for Early Alert?
Your instructor is concerned about your overall success in the course and has noticed that, due to a particular reason, your work is not up to par for the class.
What should I do if I get contacted by someone from the Early Alert Program?
Follow up on the recommendations made through the communication. You can email any questions or concerns to ouea@oakland.edu or call (248) 370-2529.
Does it get put on my permanent record?
No. This information is part of the Early Alert program and will not become part of your academic record.
Does getting contacted mean that I am failing?
Receiving notification from Early Alert does not mean that you are failing your class. Speak to your instructor about the areas of concern identified on your notification from Early Alert. Clarification from your instructor will give you a better idea of where you stand in the class.

How and when do I make a referral?
As a faculty member at Oakland University you have the best and earliest perspective on a student’s ability to complete the course work necessary for your class. If you observe a student who struggles on the first graded assignment for the semester or demonstrates other early difficulties, make an Early Alert referral for that student.
The most effective referral is the one received after the first graded assignment, which gives students the opportunity to get the assistance needed to be academically successful for your course.
What is the Early Alert Process?
- Early Alert Referral form is completed, activating the Early Alert process. (Faculty wishing to submit several early alert referrals at the same time may use this form).
- Student is contacted by the Early Alert Retention Coordinator, addressing academic difficulties while utilizing campus resources.
- Follow-up e-mail will be generated to faculty notifying them that the students have been contacted.
