Tutoring is a free service available in various subjects to all enrolled Oakland University students. We offer walk-in and appointment tutoring in one-hour sessions. The understanding you have of the material drives the pace of your tutoring sessions, making learning interactive and personalized.
Tutors are OU students, trained by The Tutoring Center staff, who have developed successful tutoring strategies. Tutors help clarify your homework assignments and course content. They will not teach the class or complete your homework, but they can help you become an independent learner and a successful student.
Why should I get a tutor?
- If you have difficulty understanding the professor.
- If you don't have enough foundational knowledge for the course.
- If you have difficulty completing assignments.
How do I get a tutor?
- Use the online schedule
- Tutoring in many courses is offered on a walk-in basis and no appointment is necessary.
- If you cannot find a tutor for your specific subject, submit a Tutor Request Form.
Make the most of your tutoring appointment
- Integrate tutoring into your study routine.
- Try your homework before seeing a tutor.
- Bring your class materials (textbooks, syllabus, assignments, previous tests, etc.) to tutoring.
- Walk-in tutoring may be done in a group. Therefore, everyone is responsible to ask and answer questions. Group tutoring facilitates sharing and collaboration.
- Come for tutoring at least one week before a test, not the day before.
- Plan ahead to ensure tutor availability, especially during peak times like mid-terms and before tests.
- Tutors should not replace class; they address specific concerns. You should still attend class regularly.
