Seth Howes received his Ph.D. in German from the University of Michigan in 2012, after defending a dissertation entitled "Punk Avant-Gardes: Disengagement and the End of East Germany." His areas of research and teaching interests include contemporary German politics and culture; the theory and history of the avant-garde; German literature, art, and music of the 20th and 21st centuries; and Frankfurt School critical theory. He is currently working on a book manuscript in which he retheorizes the historical role (and border-crossing influences) of the avant-garde in the Cold War culture of divided Germany.
