Step 3: Make a Decision
Making career decisions is a lifelong process. After completing self-assessment inventories and researching possible options, you may be ready to make a decision about your major and/or career. Piece together the information you’ve gathered to answer the following questions:
  • Are the career/major options you identified compatible with your interests, personality, skills, and values?

  • What do you like and dislike about each major/career option?

  • What are the degree requirements for each major? Do the courses and requirements interest you?

  • Do you need to do some more exploring or meet with your adviser to help sift through the information? Or, are you ready to make a decision?
Once you’ve made a decision, it’s important to set goals that will help you achieve your desired outcomes. Get started now using the SMART formula.

Specific: Be descriptive and objective in your goal statements; state specifically what it is that you want to achieve and when.Measurable: How will you show evidence that you have achieved your goal? Determine a concrete method to measure your achievement.Attainable: Create goals that will be a challenge, but are also within reason for you. Relevant: Make your goals something YOU personally desire to accomplish. Time-bound: Set a specific date or timeline in which to achieve your goal. Short-term goals are those which you want to achieve within a matter of a few months; long-term goals can be for one, five, or ten years down the road.
