All first-year and undecided students will work with an academic adviser in the First Year Advising Center until you are ready to start meeting with the advising office for the school or college your major is offered through.
New transfer students who have decided on a major can go directly to the unit advising office for academic advising.
Every student’s journey to a major and career decision is unique to them and our advisers are here to work with students at every stage of this process. In addition to three required academic advising appointments, your adviser may also suggest major exploration and/or career counseling appointments as well. During your appointments, your adviser can help you decide between a few majors (major exploration) or help you narrow down an exhaustive list of options that all sound interesting to you (career counseling). While these decisions may, at times, seem overwhelming, rest assured your adviser will be there to support you every step of the way.

All undergraduate students are welcome to schedule appointments outside of the required ones outlined below for all incoming first-year and undecided students,
especially if you're having academic difficulty or considering changing majors.
1. New student orientation
At new student orientation, you'll meet with your academic adviser and have an opportunity to talk about academic offerings at OU. You will schedule your first year of classes. This counts as your first required visit. One down, just two more to go!
2. Fall appointment
Your required fall appointment will be a one-on-one meeting with your assigned academic adviser. At this appointment, you will talk about your transition to OU and how you can stay focused on the finish line (graduation) from the very start. If you’re still deciding on a major, your adviser will help you explore your options and may suggest further career counseling. Your adviser will also help connect you to involvement opportunities at OU and answer any questions you have about your college experience. Call the office to schedule this appointment or attend walk-in hours for your assigned adviser.
3. Winter appointment
Your required winter appointment may be a one-on-one meeting with your assigned academic adviser or a group advising appointment. Depending on whether you’ve decided on a major or are still exploring your options, what you discuss in this meeting may vary. Be prepared to talk about how your fall semester went and how you have gotten involved on campus. Your adviser will assist you in selecting courses for your second year, so we recommend scheduling this appointment before full year registration begins in March. Call the office to schedule this appointment or attend walk-in hours for your assigned adviser.
After you have completed your three required appointments with your
First Year Advising Center adviser, we will help you transition to the
advising office for the school or college that offers your major. These
advisers will help you make sure you're fulfilling major requirements
and on track for graduation. Be sure to ask them about your degree
evaluation!

Scheduling appointments will help you stay on track, reduce your wait time, and you'll likely have a more productive appointment. To schedule an appointment, simply call our office at (248) 370-3227.
