Let's see how IPS humans edit a page. Here's part of their About Us page, with some dummy text.
Let's focus on the page content on the left for now. We'll talk about the list on the right later.
Most IPS employees do not have permission to edit the page, but a few do. Each ATiB site has a permission system, custom designed for the site's owner.
Suppose I edit the page. Here's the edit screen:
I can use the toolbar to make text bold, center it, create lists, add links, whatever I need. I've used Word, so it's easy to figure out the buttons.
I'll add some text:
Just type. No HTML or other geeky stuff.
Now for a picture. I'll add Oscar, one of my dogs. I start here:
I click Browse, choose a file on my PC, and click Upload:
Now I click Insert to add the image into the text:
Now for some advanced stuff. I'll make the photo move to the right. Oooo!
I right-click the image, and select Properties. Then set the alignment:
Click OK, and I see:
All this happens in a standard Web browser! Like the one you're using now. No software to buy, nothing to install. Really! Trust me, I'm a doctor.
Anyone can learn this. Sure, there's some training involved, maybe an hour or two. But no geek skills are required. Jill - the service manager - can learn this. John - the HR dude - can learn this.
One other thing. The toolbar you've seen is simple. Bolding, italics, a few other things. This works for most people, most of the time.
But what if you want more control? That's where the text format selector comes in:
If you choose Full WYSIWYG:
Wow! That's a
lot of buttons! Most people won't use this interface. But if you need it, it's there.
The bottom line:
- You don't need to be a geek to update an ATiB site.
- Anyone can learn the ATiB back end in an hour or two.
- The simple interface is almost always the one to use. But there's an advanced interface, if you need it.
Let's look at another example of how a good back end makes your life easier.
