“Writing-to-Learn” Faculty Development Institute – 2012/2013
Faculty Development Institutes are a year-long series for faculty to have the opportunity to develop, implement, assess & reflect on innovative teaching practices
Orientation: Wednesday, April 18th, 2012
12:00 pm - 1:30 pm - The Learning Studio, 200A Elliott Hall
The "Writing to Learn" (W2L) Faculty Development Institute is designed to facilitate the simultaneous improvement of student learning and writing instruction across the disciplines at Oakland University. Institute participants will apply, assess, and develop the instructional practices summarized in the W2L wiki (http://WritingToLearnOU.pbworks.com), which addresses the following:
- how to develop your students' critical thinking abilities through writing exercises
- a variety of suggestions of ways to prevent plagiarism
- detailed discussion of the value of creating a high quality peer review process n the classroom
- numerous suggestions of low-risk, scaffolding, and scenario-based writing projects that remain instructor-friendly
- suggestions for giving students constructive feedback on their writing without increasing instructor workload
