This online Handbook has been developed to assist the students of the School of Engineering and Computer Science in organizing their programs of study. We hope that it will help students to achieve educational and career objectives and interpret catalog requirements, as well as to provide a ready reference on the policies and procedures of the School and University. - The Assembly - The Assembly of the School of Engineering and Computer Science is responsible for all matters pertaining to the welfare of the school and, in particular, for establishing academic polocies. This includes establishment of degrees and requirements for academic programs and certification of candidates for degrees.
- The Committee on Academic Standing - The Committee on Academic Standing (CAS) is involved in activities which are of most interest to undergraduate students. The composition of the committee includes four faculty members ad the Associate Dean. The primary responsibility of the committee is to review academic progress of undergraduate students in the school and to take appropriate action where needed. The committee also acts as an appeals board for students requesting exceptions to academic programs and for grievances pertaining to academic matters.
- The Undergraduate Curriculum Committee - The primary responsibilities of this committee are to formulate and review all undergraduate programs offered by the school, act as a review board for all new undergraduate courses, conduct surveys and analysis of teaching effectiveness in the course taught by the faculty, and monitor any experimental teaching programs as well as assessing program outcomes and educational objectives to insure that desired program characteristics are achieved as part of a continuous quality improvement process. The committee is composed of the Associate Dean, one faculty member from each department, one at-large member and one student member (who is also a member of the Assembly).

- Prerequisites and Corerequisites - If Course B lists Course A as a prerequisite, Course A must be taken and passed in a previous semester before Course B can be taken. Corequisite courses may be taken during the same semester. Students who have registered for courses for which they do not meet the prerequisite conditions will have their registration cancelled and will be liable for any financial penalties incurred.

- Test Policy for 100-Level Courses: Instructors of 100-level courses are to provide, to each registered student, some form of evaluation of his/her academic progress prior to one week before the withdrawl period ends.
- Test Policy at End of Semester: University regulations prohibit scheduling any test during the last week of classes in any semester. "Take-home" finals, where allowed by an instructor, are also included in the rule; that is, the due date may not fall within the last week of classes.

- Course Evaluations - Course evaluations by students of faculty and courses are one of the methods used in the School of Engineering and Computer Science to assess teaching effectiveness. They serve both to identify areas of performance that need improvement and to provide information on administrative decisions regarding tenure, reappointment and reward. Each semester, students have the opportunity to go online and evaluate every course offered in the SECS. These evaluations ask several questions about how the objectives of the course were covered and the characteristics of the instructor. Comments are encouraged. The evaluations are anonymous. Instructors do not have access to the evaluation results until after they have electronically submitted their grades. Since these evaluations are referred to when making personnel decisions, students are asked to be fair-minded and constructive in their assessments.
