- Grizzly Oaks Disc Golf Course: This student-created, 18-hole course is located just off P-11 and the upper athletic fields. It's intertwined with a walking/jogging trail, free and open to the public. No need to be a pro, to have or even know what a Valkyrie is; the disc golf community is an inclusive one and eager to teach. However, this course is sure to challenge even the most seasoned disc golfers and there is no pro shop, so bring some sort of disc to toss. Learn more about disc golf and OU's course here.
- Learn Leadership: There's really no place like a college campus to develop or hone your leadership skills. Not only does OU have a rich history of successful alumni who have once took on student leadership, but it also has a solid network of mentors and programs to help you become one of them. Even new students can start taking advantage of leadership opportunities like orientation group leaders and orientation assistants.
- Work on campus: There are tons of student employment opportunities to help pay your way through college. Some student organizations offer paid positions along with field experience, like The Oakland Post student newspaper and student government position. Many departments across campus also offer paid positions from office jobs helping students and faculty, to outdoor work at the golf courses. For help with tuition payment, students can find work study positions which are awarded partially based on financial need and directly help pay for tuition. And don't forget about graduate assistantships that offer tuition stipends! For a list of open positions, go to OU Career Link and select on-campus student employment in the drop down menu. For more information about paid positions with student organizations, visit the Center for Student Activities in the basement of the Oakland Center.
- Recreation Center: You don't have to let lemonades, hamburgers and hammocks keep you tempted to relax all summer long. Balance it out with a membership to the Rec Center. Membership rates and fees vary depending on class load, check your eligibility and rates here. Even community members who are not enrolled are able to sign up for the Rec, which Rec offers a full schedule of group classes (including yoga), a stocked weight room, indoor track and pool, table tennis, various courts, plus services like massage therapy.
Check out this quick video about the Rec Center pool's lifeguards. Visit the pool this summer and get some exercise or just relax and cool off.
- Athletics: Several of OU's Division I teams play during the summer and a home game is the perfect way to enjoy a day. Summer sports include baseball, track and field, cross country, golf, soccer and softball.
- Explore the campus: You really don't even have to be doing anything in particular to enjoy the beauty of OU's 1,441 acres in the spring and summer. Benches and shade trees are aplenty all around campus to pull up a seat and read, relax, people watch and just enjoy. A sight you will definitely want to see is the rows of crab apples in front of Kresge Library when they bloom in the spring. A student favorite is the view of Bear Lake, which has newly installed hammocks. There you'll often hear the serenade of students playing acoustic guitar, can catch a Dagorhir match or be able to join in on a game of Frisbee.
Use your break between classes to explore the Meadow Brook Greenhouse. The beautiful colors will be sure to brighten your day! Ask one of the many Greenhouse volunteers what their favorite flowers are.
