Cooperative Learning Strategies for the Classroom

Please join us for an interactive workshop facilitated by Barbara Oakley from SECS.

Studies have revealed that allowing students to work in groups and teams both inside and outside the classroom enables them to achieve higher grades, learn at a deeper level, retain information longer, become less likely to drop from a program, acquire greater communication skills, and work more effectively long-term in their chosen vocation.

Neither students nor instructors can naturally be expected to know how to work effectively with student teams. There are a few simple steps instructors need to take to help students form strong teamwork skills while simultaneously reducing the instructor’s own “office hour overload” and ensuring that students receive fair grades for team-related efforts. This workshop provides university-level instructors a simple framework to easily create and effectively handle student teams—a win-win for instructor and student alike.

Barbara Oakley is an associate professor of engineering at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. She earned a B. A. in Slavic Languages and Literature and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle. She received a M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering, both from Oakland University. Her research focuses on the complex relationship between neurocircuitry and social behavior.  Oakley is a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Frontiers in Engineering New Faculty Fellow Award, John D. and Dortha J. Withrow Teaching Award, Naim and Ferial Kheir Teaching Award, and she was designated as NSF New Century Scholar. She has also received the NSF Antarctic Service Medal following her work as a communications expert at the South Pole Station. Prior to her academic career, Oakley also rose from the ranks of Private to Captain in the U.S. Army, during which time she was recognized as a Distinguished Military Scholar. Oakley is an elected fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the author of Coldblooded Kindness (Prometheus Press, 2011), Evil Genes (Prometheus Press, 2008), and Hair of the Dog (WSU Press, 1996).  She was also lead editor of Pathological Altruism (Oxford University Press, 2012) and co-editor of Career Development in Bioengineering and Biotechnology (Springer, 2008)
