There is an increasing number of international students and scholars who are studying and researching in the United States. Oakland University is not an exception. Classrooms at Oakland University encompass many cultures of the world, and OU faculty members interact with international students inside and outside the classroom on a daily basis. This FLC intends to promote OU faculty members’ understanding of the cultures that international students and scholars bring to OU and to enhance the quality of interactions between faculty and international students.
This FLC will offer OU faculty members an opportunity to be aware of their current perceptions about foreign cultures and international student population, to share their experiences, to explore effective ways of interacting with the international student population, and to build healthy faculty-student relationships. It is expected that this effort will ultimately contribute to boosting Oakland University’s status as an internationally-renowned institution.
The following are three primary objectives of this FLC:
- To increase faculty participants’ awareness about the cultures of international students
- To promote faculty participants’ competency to guide and work with international students successfully and to create a more diversity-friendly environment
- To recognize the issues regarding international students at Oakland University and to search for effective ways to work with international students
