Please join us for an interactive workshop on the transfer of learning with Dana Driscoll, assistant professor of writing and rhetoric.
Faculty across the disciplines often ask:
- Why does it seem like students haven’t learned anything in previous coursework?
- Why do employers bemoan students’ lack of knowledge, even when we know these skills were taught?
- How can we encourage students to retain learning beyond our courses?
Each of these questions directly relate to the concept of transfer of learning. Transfer is the ability to use prior knowledge and skills in new situations and identify which situations prior learning is most applicable.
This workshop provides participants with an introduction and group discussion surrounding this concept, and will include:
- Defining transfer of learning Identifying challenges for transfer across the disciplines
- Discussing evidence-based pedagogical practices for transferring knowledge into, throughout, and beyond courses and programs
- Providing models of successful transfer-based assignments and activities
Seating is limited.
Lunch will be provided.
