Making Students Savvy Readers

Success Through Reading Improvement

This Faculty Learning Community will explore students’ reading problems, helping faculty to understand students’ reading difficulties and to develop strategies that will allow faculty to achieve their own instructional goals while helping students develop strong reading skills.

I envision the FLC as dividing into three parts: first, study and discussion on the nature of good reading. A second part will review recent research on students’ reading problems. As a follow-up to these studies, participants will conduct a few case studies with students of their own. Finally, we will compile our findings and discuss strategies for teaching to enhance students’ reading abilities.

By the end of FLC, participants will have revised syllabi to address students’ reading needs and may be making presentations at teaching conferences on and off campus.
