Purpose of Program
The Oakland University Lean Diversification Program was designed to educate key personnel in your organization about lean principles to make your organization ready for diversification.

Lean and Diversification

The program puts perspectives, tools and lean thinking at your disposal so that you are able to help your organization improve internally first, in preparation to proactively and efficiently diversify if it is appropriate.

The lean philosophy focuses on developing excellence and innovation by identifying what is of highest value to stakeholders and customers, and then allocating resources to achieve these goals while eliminating waste.

Target Market

  • Company in Macomb, Wayne or Oakland counties
  • Company in the defense, homeland security, aerospace or manufacturing related industry
  • Company that is heavily reliant on one specific industry or on a select number of products and would like to seek out avenues for diversification into other industries or products
  • Participant(s) from the company are management or other identified change agent for the company
This is the target market, but anyone can participate in the program.


Length of Program


Lean Green Belt Certificate

  • Now offered October 2-December 11, 2012
  • 44 hours of classroom and online time
  • 1 day per week in classroom
  • 4+ hours per week online (x2 weeks)
  • 1 day benchmark visit (lean assessment) to 1 company
  • 5 weeks (no class) to complete your project

Lean Black Belt Certificate

  • 75 hours of classroom and online time
  • 2 days per week in classroom
  • 4 hours per week online (x3 weeks)
  • 1 day benchmark visits (lean assessments) to 2 companies
  • 4 weeks (no class) to complete your project
Regular scheduled sessions: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Participants receive certificates of completion at the end of the program.
