WGS Graduate, Feliece Turner, has been selected as the second-prize winner in Kresge Library's Undergraduate Research in Writing Award competition in recognition of her outstanding paper, "I am not my hair: A Black women's struggle with identity through hair." She will receive a scholarship award in the amount of $250.

Emily Eisele, Women and Gender Studies major, received the "Provost's Undergraduate Student Research Award" for her project "Photovoice as Empowerment: Hamtramck Urban Agriculture Policy Project."

Heidi Emery, a double major in Women and Gender Studies and Communication, received a "2011 Meritorious Achievement Award." This prestigious award from the College of Arts and Sciences includes a citation and a $250 honorarium. The Meritorious Achievement Award is presented to outstanding students who in their academic activities exemplify the variety and scope of work in the Arts and Sciences.

Cherie Rolfe, a journalism major minoring in Women and Gender Studies, was name recipient of the "Bunting and Briggs Freedom of the Press Scholarship" for fall 2010. This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in journalism who plans to work as a reporter upon graduation and was employed at least 20 hours per week at a professional newspaper or worked for an Oakland University student newspaper in a staff writer or editor capacity.

Juquatta Brewer, minor in Women and Gender Studies with a major in Psychology was one of three recipients of the prestigious "Keeper of the Dream Scholarship Award" for contributions and promotion of interracial understanding and tolerance. She was also awarded the Sidney Fink Memorial Award for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Leah Markowitz was an invaluable part of the Gender and Sexuality Center team at Oakland University since she started her internship in September 2008. Her passion and dedication to women and the LBGT community at OU was evident in her willingness to go the extra mile and work beyond what is requiried for an internship. Leah organized the entire GSC library, facilitated "That Time of the Week," helped with monthly social awareness programs and created OU's first sexual assault awareness and prevention program. She was awarded the "Women and Gender Studies Service and Leadership Award" in 2009.

Callie Moss, Women and Gender Studies major, received the "Women of Oakland University Critical Difference Scholarship for 2008-2009." The award is handed out annually to students who are single, head of household, and who have had their education interrupted for at least one year.
