Students currently enrolled
at Oakland University are invited to apply for student research grants
under the guidance of a full-time Oakland University faculty member.
Only one application per project will be considered. Applications are
submitted online in RAM 3.0. Refer to the URC Guidelines for application preparation.
- Support may be requested for supplies, minor items of equipment,
technical services of various kinds, and costs of travel, where that
travel has been carefully justified and does not qualify for a Student
Travel Grant. University regulations on travel reimbursement are to be
followed. It is also important to understand that anything purchased
with grant funds is subject to university property guidelines. The
details of any proposed or approved matching support should be provided
along with the total cost of the project.
- Funding to defray a portion of the costs connected with
presentation of original work at a professional meeting or conference
should be requested through the Student Travel Grants competition.
Each grant proposal must include all applicable items from the following list. Incomplete applications or proposals
that exceed the page limits or do not include the required items listed
below will not be considered for funding. Applicants are encouraged to
talk to any member of the URC about the proposal preparation process.
1. Proposal- Grant proposals and any supplementary documentation should be uploaded to RAM as a single file (preferably in pdf format) and should include the following elements:
- Title Page: This page should include the project title, applicant name(s), affiliation and a project abstract of 200 words of less.
- A project narrative that is strictly limited to the
equivalent of two 8.5″ x 11″ pages with one-inch margins on all sides,
single-spaced, in Arial 11 point font or larger. The project narrative
should introduce the research topic, address the significance/goals,
present the research plan and methods and list the proposed outcomes and
timetable. Students should also include a short paragraph describing
their educational background and experience as it relates to the
proposed project.
- Bibliography (No more than one page)
- Budget and Budget Justification: The proposal file should include a budget for the proposed project, including a breakdown of proposed expenditures
- Transcript: Student applicants must include a current transcript. An advising copy of the transcript obtained from SAIL is acceptable.
- Regulatory Compliance: If the proposed project involves
the use of human subjects, animals, or hazardous/radioactive materials,
approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal
Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety Committee
(IBC), and/or Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) must be obtained before
work can be initiated or else the applicant must clearly state why this
approval is not required. The Principal Investigator (PI) is allowed to
submit the compliance approval after the application is submitted.
Confirmation of compliance approval is required before funding is
received. For assistance, contact the Regulatory Compliance Officer in
the Office of Research Administration at (248)
370-2762.
2. A Mentor Endorsement Form must be
completed by a full-time member of the Oakland University faculty and
submitted via email within one week of the submission of the
application. The student application is not considered complete until the Mentor Endorsement Form is provided. By
completing the form, the faculty member indicates a willingness to
serve as an expert consultant on the proposed project for a period that
could span up to twelve months.
Award recipients are notified by e-mail that an
account has been established for expenses related to their projects or
programs. After one year, the account will be closed and the remaining
funds will revert back to the URC.
