MALS Fall Dessert and Coffee

The annual fall dessert and coffee will take place on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 5:30 PM in Room 125 in the Oakland Center.  Refreshments will be served and Chris Clason will discuss proposal writing and theses committees.


Transition

Professor Linda Benson announced her retirement from Oakland University where she taught in the Department of History and served as director of the MALS program for the past six years.  She has been succeeded by Professor Christopher Clason of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.

MALS students and faculty gathered to celebrate her contributions to Oakland University and the MALS program on Saturday, April 21, 2012.





MALS students who wish to learn more about the MALS Final Project (LBS 600) are invited to attend a special evening session led by MALS Director Linda Benson on Monday, February 7, 2011 from 5 - 6 p.m. in the Oakland Center, Lake St. Clair Room (next to the Gold Rooms).  Your RSVP to the program secretary at osterber@oakland.edu would be greatly appreciated.


On Wednesday, March 23, 2011 join students, guests, and faculty for an informal get-together from 5 - 6:30 p.m. in the Oakland Center, Lake St. Clair Room.  Undergraduates and recent college graduates interested in the program are especially welcome to attend.


Morris Young Gives Lecture at Oakland University
Professor Margaret Willard-Traub, of Oakland University, invited Morris Young, associate professor of English at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, to present a lecture on his book Minor Re/Visions:  Asian American Literacy Narratives as a Rhetoric of Citizenship, as part of her MALS courses on "Women and Autobiography" at Oakland University, March 30, 2006.  The lecture focused on literacy artifacts - anything from a report card, a paper or a poem written for a class or a page from a personal diary or study group - and ways in which these spark student insights into theor own experiences with literacy. 


Kent State Professors Give Lecture on Climate Change
Professors Allison Smith and Donald Palmer from Kent State gave a lecture on climate change at Oakland University, October 25, 2005.  About 50-60 guests attended the lecture which dealt with subjects ranging from ancient civilizations, sunspots, the freezing of the Thames and the dustbowl.  The profesors used such interdisciplinary methods as studying medieval psalters, geologtical graphs and timelines, 17th century paintings and 20th century photography to explore the topic of climate change.

MALS Group Gives Presentation in Minneapolis
MALS students Teri Allbright, Dan Brown, and Jane Hellmann led by Professor Natalie Cole, presented their research from LBS 500: "Images of the City" at the Annual Conference for the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs in Minneapolis, MN, October 7-8, 2005.  The group presented an overview of the course and read shortened versions of their final papers as a panel.  In addition to participating in the conference, they were able to take in some of the sights and cultural life of Minnesota.



MALS Students Give Presentations at the Older Persons Commission
MALS students gave presentations at the Older Persons Commission (OPC) in Rochester, Michigan, September 20, 2005.  The student panel, titled "Science and Religion and the Art of Film," showcased research projects from past MALS courses.  Student presenters were Dan Brown, Susan Brown, Cristin Carlson and Holly Shreve-Gilbert.  Presentations were followed by discussion with members of the OPC.
