Biography
I joined the School of Health Sciences at Oakland University in 2009. Prior to working at Oakland University, I completed my PhD in Human Nutrition at Michigan State University where my research explored the associations between school wellness policies, the school nutrition environment, and adolescent dietary intake. Through my research, I aim to improve health promotion and primary prevention of chronic diseases in children and adolescents through use of the school setting. Currently, my research focus is on improving access to a healthy school breakfast, especially in low-income and minority populations. I am also interested in use of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Coordinated School Health model (
http://www.cdc.gov/HealthyYouth/CSHP), use of self-assessment tools such as the Michigan Healthy School Action Tool (
www.mihealthtools.org/healthyschools), and use of Community-Based Participatory Research methodology. With all of my research projects, the goal is to translate research into changes in health policy and practices, and to develop sustainable models of health promotion.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching and having engaging discussions with students. I currently teach a variety of courses in nutrition, health science, exercise science, and wellness, health promotion and injury prevention. As much as possible, I try to integrate my real-life and research experiences in my teaching methodologies to help students draw the real-world connections to the subject matter. I invite students to get involved with research projects and to volunteer with community-based organizations to enhance their educational experiences.

Interests
Outside of work, I enjoy outdoor activities including biking, running, swimming (and the occasional triathlon!). I am passionate about all types of dancing (swing, Latin, ballroom, line dancing, Zumba, etc.), and music. I enjoy spending time with family and friends, attending concerts and sporting events, and traveling with my husband.
