| As the longest-serving governor in Michigan history, William G. Milliken had a profound effect on the development of this state’s institutions including Oakland University, which grew to ten times its original size during his years in public service. He appointed the original eight members of the Board of Trustees, establishing a pattern of naming distinguished individuals to university boards. His deep commitment to the principles of effective government and its limitations and the corresponding power of public service have been widely recognized and admired. His years as an ex-Governor have been characterized by an energetic commitment to many public policy issues, especially environmental protection. The wisdom and good will accumulated over many years of public service confer authority and dignity on his continued engagement in vital questions of public policy.
Oakland University celebrated Milliken's accomplishments in government and public service by conferring upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
