Important Group Exercise Information
The Department of Campus Recreation offers a weekly schedule of group exercise classes and a variety of mind/body fitness classes for physical activity, stress management, and social interaction.  A variety of class formats are provided to challenge fitness enthusiasts at any level.

Designed to provide a balanced workout regimen, the Group Exercise class schedule provides a vareity of cardiovascular, strength, and flexiblity workouts from which to choose.  Classes are drop-in, allowing for flexibilty in individual scheduling, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Students and paying members of the Recreation Center wishing to take a mind/body classes must purchase a a Mind/Body FitPass.  All other classes on the schedule are free for students and paying members.  OU benefits-eligible employees with free access to the facility must purchase a FitPass to take any format of classes on the schedule.

Class formats focus on motivation and fun, yet emphasize safety and technique to assist participants in reaching their personal fitness goals.

All Group Exercise Instructors are CPR/AED and First Aid certified, and many hold nationally recognized group fitness certifications.  Instructors have previous group exercise leadership experience prior to hiring.




Group Exercise Class Policies

Students and paying Rec Center Members
  • Drop-in classes are free to all Oakland University students and paying Recreation Center members.  Mind/body classes (those marked with a $) require the purchase of a Mind/Body FitPass. 
  • All students and paying Rec Center members wishing to take non-mind/body group exercise classes must register for a free unlimited FitPass at the Welcome Center, Service Counter, or online prior to taking a group exercise class.  Registration is required each semester.
OU Benefits-Eligible Employees
  • OU benefits-eligible employees must purchase a Group Exercise FitPass to participate in any of the group exercise classes on the schedule (including Mind/Body classes).  FitPasses are available in increments of 12 classes, 24 classes, and Unlimited.  Single class FitPasses are also an option.
  • Passes can be purchased at the Welcome Center or online and will be activated immediately.
All Group Exercise and Mind/Body Class Participants  
  • Participants are required to check in for a class at the Service Counter to get an admission card for the class they are attending. 
  • Participants should allow enough time prior to the start of class to allow for check in.  All classes have capacity limits.  If a class reaches capacity no additional participants will be allowed to check in for that particular class.
  • Participants will be required to present their admission card at the door of the class to either the attendant on duty or the instructor.  Participants must have an admission card to participate.
  • Instructors will start and end classes on time to keep the daily schedule on track and out of respect for participant's personal schedules.  It is important that participants are in attendance for the warm-up.  Participants arriving to class more than 10 minutes after class has begun may not be allowed to participate.  This is for participant safety.
  • Group Exercise Instructors and Recreation Center staff have the right to refuse a participant access to a class that is already in session or at full capacity.  At any time during a class or between class times, the Instructor or staff has the right to ask a participant to leave the Studio/Court 5/Activity Center and/or hallway outside of the activity spaces due to unacceptable behavior.
  • Equipment is provided for all classes.  For yoga sessions, mats can be checked out at the Service Counter across from the Studio.  Participants can also bring their own yoga mat for use in class.
  • Non-marking athletic shoes must be worn in all group exercise classes (except yoga, Pilates-based classes, or other specialty formats with alternate footwear requirements).  The Department of Campus Recreation reserves the right to turn away any participant who is wearing attire that compromises the safety of the participants in the class, including him/her self.  Exceptions may be made for religious purposes. 
  • Classes must maintain an average of 5 participants to remain on the schedule. 
  • Instructors will wait 15 minutes for participants to show up before cancelling a class.  After 15 minutes and no participants, the class is cancelled.  There are no minimum participation numbers for holding a class (i.e.:  if only one participant shows up, the instructor will teach to that person). 
  • Personal belongings not being used or worn during a class must be kept in a locker.  The Department of Campus Recration is not responsible for lost or stolen items not properly secured in a locker.
  • The use of a towel or full t-shirt during exercises involving mats is recommended to help maintain sanitary workout conditions.
  • Water in a closed container with a tight-fitting lid is the only food or beverage allowed in the activity spaces.

Minimum Participation & Cancellations
All group exercise classes must maintain a minimum average of 5 participants to remain on the schedule.  Any class not meeting minimum participation will be removed from the schedule with two weeks notice.

Refunds
  • Refunds will be issued for Group Exercise and Mind/Body Passes in the following situations:
    • The Department of Campus Recreation cancels a class due to low enrollment or other circumstances (no cancellation fee).  Refunds will be given at a weekly pro-rated (unlimited passes) or per class used (punch passes) rate.
    • Documented medical-related reasons.  For medical refund requests, written physician documentation must accompany the Refund Request Form (available at the Recreation Center Welcome Center) at the time of the refund request.  Approved medical-related refunds will be given at a weekly pro-rated (unlimited passes) or per class used (punch passes) rate for all Fit Passes (no cancellation fee).
  • All FitPasses expire at the end of the semester.  Unused classes on the 12, 24, or single classes cannot be transferred to another person or semester.
